What do you guys breed?

#182492 Posted on 2018-08-05 16:00:49

I'm curious what everyone breeds and what they breed for, do you breed for stats, conformation or color? Maybe a combination of the three? More popular breeds or the less popular ones? Do you focus on just one or multiple breeds? Do you breed for yourself only or for the public as well? Or maybe just stricktly public? Do you work with other players(breeding partner) or just off on your own?

My answers to my own questions,

I'm breeding for stats with my driving friesians and keeping to only blacks, I recently added Thoroughbreds into my stables but I'm not sure what I'll be doing with them. I have them set for racing but I'm not sure if I'm going to do just stats or add some color or work for conformation with them. I think I'll be keeping my lines to myself and maybe buy some outside blood later on or just keep adding foundation horses into the mix but that might change and I might have a stud up. I don't think I'll be adding in any more horse breeds to my stables, truefully I was only going to stick with friesians since they're my favorite breed of all time but I fell in love with the thoroughbred art here so I've added them.

i have three main projects:

endurance mustangs
focusing on stats and color equally, with conformation being secondary but still important. i have mostly long-lined horses who i buy from other players or breed from foundations and other low gens that i usually have on hand.

dressage arabians
focusing on eliminating bay and on increasing sabino and rabicano in the herd. i started with foundations with 58+ conformation. stats are important so i breed them at 17+, but low stats won’t deter me from buying a foundation horse from another player.

dressage thoroughbreds
eliminating bay and chestnut, increasing cream and all white markings/pattterns. same goals as dressage arabians, but i plan on incorporating outside blood in when possible. (hit me up if you have low gen foals for sale!)

i also dabble in many other side projects. i have at least two horses of every breed haha. my lines are also all totally public. i sell or RC foals every generation since i breed for color/confo, and all my horses over 15 are always available for stud/brood, though i don’t list them.

Miniatures! I'm working on minis in driving, though hoping to shoot for all three. Once I have some worthy to sell I'll sell to the public as well as breed for myself.

I'm also working with Quarters, Paints and Thoroughbreds! Just came back from a very long absence so building back up at he moment.

Do you breed for stats, conformation, or color? - color, with stats in mind as well
More popular breeds or the less popular ones? - I don't base my breed selections on this
Do you focus on just one or multiple breeds? - Thoroughbreds, Chincos, Shetlands, Trakes, Paints, Welshies, Clydes, with the first four that I listed being my main focus for the most part (especially the TBs)
Do you breed for yourself or for the public? - myself, though I do have some horses up for stud/brood
Do you work with other players or just off on your own? - on my own

I primarily breed Thoroughbreds, but I get distracted easily and so generally have at least one or two other breeds floating around. Right now, that’s Quarter Horses and some Trakes.

My Thoroughbreds are bred racing for stats (with focus on low non-spec) and conformation primarily. For awhile, I was trying a “diversified” approach and strictly raising TBs—but in across all specialities. Unfortunately, there just isn’t a market for it so I sold off or converted all of my non-racing stock. And even racers don’t sell especially well.

My Quarter Horses are for western, same details as above—although I do look at color and markings as a bonus. They’re my “fun” breed since there’s so much more variation.

I avoid inbreeding or linebreeding of any kind, but I know this is kind of pointless. Just a long-standing personal preference on sims. I’ve tried to break the habit a few times, but I still wind up keeping those horses separate from the rest of my herd which only worsens the inbreeding.

I offer all of my horses for public stud/brood, so I try and make sure I’m putting out stock that will be competitive for those who choose to show while also strong additions to herds that are focused on other attributes. I don’t work with any other players specifically, but there are a few folks that I regularly trade breedings or horses back and forth with, or that I know I can go to to purchase strong stock.

My main projects are dressage tekes, dressage lippys, western quarters and paints, and driving minis but I dabble in every breed on EV really. My main focus is on stats and confo, not so much on color.

I didn't expect this post to get many replies to be honest, but it's interesting  to see what everyone else breeds for :). It's also cool to see who all breeds Thoroughbreds here I'll be keeping Racing Thoroughbred breeders here in mind for buying new blood later on :), although I have a question how hard is it to breed for color? I don't know anything about genetics and I fee like to would be a bit difficult to breed for color but I might just be wrong on that. Same goes for confirmation but I feel as if conformation would be harder to breed for then color.

I'm breeding Arabians. A few different projects.
Clean lines with decent conformation, clean lines with decent conformation and Flaxen rabicano Sabino in color, and then I have high conformation lined arabians with Flaxen Rabicano Sabino color.
I have some side projects in most other breeds as well, including Andalusians, Dutch Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, Akhal Tekes and Trakehners.

I also do a lot of rescuing.

appaloosas
- i have 2 foundation appaloosas that were for a contest before i proofed for a year, so i came back and just kept up with them and begun breeding them for foals for the public as the parents can produce a number of different combinations of colors and markings, so they’re still there but getting a bit older, once they die i probably won’t continue with them

chincoteagues
- i have show jumping chincoteagues for the community project that was started by andromeda but has now been overtaken by myself, i threw some color randomizers on them to add some color, and they also were all required to have a minimum of 55.0 confo average, so i guess it’s kind of a thing to breed for but i don’t care about it much

clydesdales
- i have dressage clydesdales who i converted from driving to fix their non specialty stats but for some reason are still doing crappy in shows so i don’t really know what i want to do with them. i’ll probably switch around breeding pairs to try and breed out the sabino in them, but otherwise they’re just..meh

friesians
- i have dressage friesians that i’m highly considering converting as i messsd them up by feeding them hay cubes for too long so their non specialty stats are really high, i’ll probably convert them to driving. i wanted to make them all chestnut but don’t have the credits to do so, so only some of them are chestnut but that was the main idea for them, they’re getting close to breeding age so i’ll have to figure that out soon

trakehners
- these are definitely my horses that are doing the best. i fed them hay cubes and then converted them so they started out really well and are still doing really well, a select few are usually always on the weekly/monthly leaderboards as foundations so that’s exciting. i put color randomizers on some of them as well so color is kind of a goal with them but mostly just raising good showers

@Skjold. I dunno how others do it, but I have 2 breeds in each division and rotate them. So for a couple days have one or two divisions unlocked and train, riding school, an breed em, then lock those and unlock a different one, and so forth, just constantly rotating. Then I’m not overwhelmed with caring for all of em.

Dressage: Dutch Warmbloods, Lippizaners, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Akhal Tekes(just starting)
Driving: Dutch Warmbloods
Endurance: Akhal Tekes, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Chincoteagues
Racing: Akhal Tekes, Appaloosas, Paints, Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses
Show Jumping: Dutch Warmbloods, Akhal Tekes, Chincoteagues
Western: Arabians, Gypsy Vanners, Chincoteagues, Quarter Horses

I clearly have more than one breed, lol.

I have a common goal for all my horses to have all poors out of conformation by generation 3.

I am for stats that would make a good show horse, so 60 or under but no more than 63. As far as color goes some of my groups I try to keep grey out of and some of them I like having it in there so it is pretty mixed.

I breed both for myself and I offer public breedings, foals, and I buy horses from others to include into my breeding programs. I don't have a breeding partner but some of the clubs I am in we do a lot of breeding between us so I usually have a few people for each breed/discipline I go to when I am looking at using and outside stud/brood.
