Alex
"The gods are choosing who goes?" Was all Alex could hear, the whispering growing louder, and more concerned. In a flash, someone was on their feet. "HEY!" Ava yelled over everyone, and there was silence. She turned to Chiron in distress. "But sir, we haven't been contacted by the gods in almost a year. Why now?"

Kahlen 
Kahlen watched everyone's reactions, fingering the silver, heart-shaped locket around her neck. Apparently, the gods hand-picking heroes wasn't all that common.

Chiron
"While they don't want to admit it," Chiron answered Ava's question, "they need heroes, especially now when they do not trust each other. They haven't contacted you because of the turmoil in Olympus." Another kid stood up, from Athena's cabin. "If the gods are choosing, couldn't the evil one pick a bunch of their minions?" Chiron shook his head. "Good point, Davis, but no. No god is allowed to pick more than one demigod, and not all the gods will be choosing." He looked to the mortal girl, the Oracle, and she nodded. "The gods will be choosing now. Sit." Those who were standing sat.

Jade
She listened with rapt attention. She nodded her head at Davis' question. It made sense. When Chiron and the girl nodded, Jade cast her glance around the room. Who would be chosen? A green mist burst from the fire and swirled through the air toward her. It stopped above her head and turned into a check mark. "Poseidon has chosen," Chiron announced, nodding to her. Jade's stomach twisted in a knot. She wasn't ready to go on any 'quest'! "Ah, your father shows his favoritism. We shall see how this ends, daughter of Poseidon. We shall see." Jade grimaced and forced herself to ignore the Voice.

Kahlen 
Kahlen watched as the mist travelled to Jade. She glanced at her brother. He looked worried. She knew he was worried about either of them being chosen. She squeezed his hand under the table.

Narration
Golden mist shot from the fire, doing zigs and zags in the air as it flew through the pavilion. It seemed to skid to a stop, directly over Kahlen's head. It changed shape into a check mark. "Apollo has made his choice," Chiron said, nodding at Khalen.

The twins stared at each other, and then at the check mark over Kahlen's head. His sister was going on the quest?!

Alex watched as Jade was chosen and winced. This wasn't good - she had only been here for a day and she was already leaving to go on a quest. Then he watched Kahlen be chosen... did the gods have something against new campers?

Narration
More colors burst from the fire, forming checks above campers' heads. Katie received a check, as did Lena, Theo, and Ethel. "Hephaestus has made his choice, Artemis has made her choice, Zeus has chosen his hero, Ares has made his choice." Chiron nodded to each one. The mortal girl stood. "The gods have finished." 

Alex
"Good." Alex thought smugly. "Easier to follow the prophecy on my own than be in the quest with the others."  'Go quietly, my child.' A soft voice whispered gently in his head. "Do not be caught. Come to me."

Jade
As campers started making their way to the bonfire, she weaved through the crowd, looking for Alex. When she found him, she gave him a shaky grin. "I guess I'm going a quest," she said. "I wish you were coming with me." She sat next to him at the Hecate table, giving Ava a small smile before turning back to Alex. They were some of the few who hadn't gotten up yet. Jade ran a hand through her hair and looked out at the crowd. 

Alex
"Me too." But Alex could see that Jade wasn't really listening, so Alex gently took her hand and pulled her away from everyone, them standing off to the side so they could talk privately. "How are you feeling?"

Jade
"Okay." Her shoulders went up in a small shrug. "I just hope the Voice doesn't talk into my head for the whole quest. I might snap." She looked out at the fields and saw the stables. "Oh, Alex," she said with a smile, "I went to the stables right before dinner. This kid Noah took me for a ride on one of the pegasi." The smile widened."It was amazing. I could see the sunset and feel the wings beating and the wind in my hair. I'll have to take you on a ride sometime. Oh, and apparently I can communicate telepathically with a pegasus because I'm Poseidon's kid." 

""Jade the Horse Whisperer." I like it." Alex grinned, glancing around to see if their absence had been noticed. Not yet. 

"Do you trust me?" Alex asked quietly, quickly.

James
 Reaching the pavilion just as the prophecy was spoken, James flopped down at the nearest table - Hermes. He shot Noah a grin as he caught his breath from running all the way there. He quickly wiped the smile off of his face when he noticed the serious atmosphere. Something about the gods choosing who got to go on a quest. He took a swig of Sprite as the mist circled around throughout the tables.
 "Should I be worried about this? I feel like I should be worried about this," he asked quietly.

Ethel
 Dread filled Ethel's stomach as the fog hovered above her head. Ares. Interesting. I mean, my Zodiac sign is Aries, but I don't think that that has anything to do with this, she speculated, throwing a piece of steak into the fire and shakily walking over to the Ares table. She sat beside Katie.
 "So, um, does this mean that Ares is my dad? Or..?" she inquired, glancing at the others at the table. I've never been very good at physical combat. More impossible standards to be held to. Just great, she grumbled internally, eyes dark and brooding. She sipped her root beer, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand afterward. Just like the good old days.

"Weeellllllll, you've been chosen by Ares for the quest, but he may not necessarily be your godly parent." Shannon replied from the other side of Katie, taking a sip of her water. Katie scowled, slapping Shannon teasingly on thr arm and turning to Ethel. "Don't mind her. If Ares is your father, he'll claim you soon - apparently Ares is the fastest when it comes to claiming kids."
