Kahlen (SCREECHMAGNUSCHASE)
Kahlen sighed. "I was showing Katie my necklace, she said.

Ethel
"Interesting. If that's not a cover up, then I don't know what is. Mind telling me why you had to come all the way out here to do that? I'm tired, and when you walk in front of the fire I can see it through the window and it's very distracting," she growled.

Kahlen
"Sorry. I wanted to make sure... a certain person wasn't around." She mentally winced. Nice, Kahlen. Juuust great.

Ethel
"You know what? Fine. You can do that. But by being all secretive and mysterious like this, before you know it, you'll become the 'certain person' to someone as well. Just... you know, think about that," Ethel finished, shrugging. She shifted her feet, the sand in her socks becoming uncomfortable. She watched as a gust of wind wiped out what was left of the fire, the embers carried away by the breeze. What was left was complete darkness.

Kahlen
Kahlen sighed. Great. One more person that hated/didn't trust her. That was exactly what she needed right now.

Jade
She was sitting in a hard-backed chair in a classroom. She realized it was the one from last year. Another memory? The bell rang, and everyone went out to their lockers, talking about their weekend plans. No, not this memory. Jade glanced up from her locker and saw Joshua, walking out of the building with the cheerleaders. Unlike the memory, however, she followed. They took him around to the back of the school, and Jade tried to call out, only to find she couldn't speak. Of course. She was here to spectate. The cheerleaders taunted him, circling him like wolves. Jade blinked as they morphed, getting mismatched legs and long claws for nails. They asked Joshua questions that he didn't know the answer to, and it hit Jade that he was a demigod, too, but he didn't know it. Jade watched as the cheerleaders pounced, clawing him and biting. As he fell, he looked up at her. "Its your fault," Joshua said, "this is your fault." Jade felt a tear slip down her cheek. "You would never say that, Josh," she whispered, and then she woke, heart pounding.

Katie
Katie sighed and stood up, tired of the accusations and the bickering. "Look, we were just talking. Am I not allowed to talk to my friend? And out here-" Katie gestured to around them. "Seemed to be one of the only safe quiet places where we could do so. Didn't you think it's a little strange, that all of this was too good to be true? Now I see why - because they send kids to their deaths out there. We haven't even been here one freaking DAY and we're already being sent on a quest. And, speaking of the quest, did you know that four of us aren't going to return? Every time there has been a quest here, they only send three people, and that generally turns out fine. BUT. Every time they have sent over three people, people die until that number is back down to three. Like Nyssa was telling me, there was a quest last summer where five people went on a quest to Atlas' mountain, and two of them died!! And even if we did split up into two groups, one person would STILL have to die." She cut herself off, tying to cool down from her rant. "Look, I don't care what you think of me after this. But somebody has to die for us all to be safe." Katie lowered her voice. "And I honestly think it should be Alex. Like, anyone else getting bad vibes whenever he's around?"

Alex
Alex had been staring up that the stars when Jade jumped next to him, and he turned to her. "Hey, sleeping beauty." He whispered, gently wiping away a few tears and pretending he didn't see the others. "Bad dream?"

Jade
"Yeah," she said with a sigh, rubbing Tod's nose. "I don't really want to talk about it," Jade added quietly. She realized she had tears on her cheeks, and blinked when he wiped them off. She looked up at the stars, recognizing a couple constellations.

Ethel
"There's also been several instances of people coming back to life, or just simply cheating death. But I do agree that Alex should die. But he's not going on the quest with us, now is he? So who else is on the chopping block?" she asked Katie. Ethel chewed her lip thoughtfully before an idea struck her.
"You, me, Kahlen. Alliance. We can make sure the others end up in the line of fire before us. We hardly know any of these people, anyway. What do you say?"
She held out her hand. Her eyes were alight with an intense darkness, but dimmed as she remembered something. Do what you have to do to make sure that you survive. Kahlen is skilled. Katie is... well, not someone that I want to get on the bad side of. Bobby doesn't matter.

Katie
Katie went to hold out her hand but drew it back. "Wait. James too. He has to be in the alliance with us." She didn't want to admit how much he reminded her of her brothers.

Alex
"That's okay." Alex murmured, interested at the sound of people in the pavillion. Who was that? His ears strained, trying to make out the voices.

-I legit just got so g i d d y oml-

Ethel
"He wasn't chosen, though. Unless you plan on bringing him along as well. But that would make an alliance of four, not three," she responded. After a pause, she continued, "But I guess that'll work. Has he been claimed yet?"

Katie
"You think I'm going to leave him here alone with Alex? Of course I'm bringing him with us." Katie snapped, watching the last few embers of the fire flickering on the grass at her feet. "I.... I don't actually know. I'll ask him tomorrow, then."

Jade
She looked at the ocean. A crab scuttled to its hole in the sand. Tod lifted his head and stood, shaking his wings and flying back to the stable. She turned to Alex. "How good are you at keeping a promise?"

Bobby
He had gone to the strawberry fields to soothe his nerves before the meeting the next morning. He played his flute as quietly as he could, running his hands gently over the leaves. He picked a strawberry and chewed it thoughtfully. The leaves rustled, and the wind brought the sound of voices. Bobby turned toward the pavilion, barely able to make out shapes. His brow furrowed. He recognized some of the voices, but he couldn't quite tell who it was. He began to trot that direction.

Alex
"What kind of promise?" Alex asked, turning to face Jade a little more. Star snorted impatiently; he'd gotten comfortable and now Alex was moving.

Jade
"I don't know how you'd label it," she said. She let out a small huff of breath. "I'll just explain." She paused, looking at the ocean a moment before continuing. No turning back now. She gazed into his eyes. "I lost my best friend a little over a year a go. His name was Joshua. I.. I don't want to lose you, too. Promise me," she stopped to still the slight shakiness in her voice, "Promise me you'll stay safe. Please."
