Crossbreeds

#90398 Posted on 2017-02-01 04:35:44

With the recent discussion around limited crossbreeding being considered for EV, I thought I'd try to compile a list of crossbreeds that would perhaps be possible on here, based on our existing breed list. This is what I have so far. If you see any errors or know of something missing, let me know and I'll fix it.

For the purposes of this discussion, a crossbreed is one where BreedA x BreedB = BreedC, which is supported by real life registries for BreedC, or other official resources. Breeds A and B are any of the 20 breeds already on EV.

Rejected breeds
Stonewall Sport Horse or Sugarbush Draft (Appaloosa x draft horse) - seems to just be one person's breeding project that they're calling a breed, but no one else seems to recognise them as such.

Pure-ish horses which can't quite meet our crossbreeding definition
These are horse breeds whose registries require either:
- at least one parent to be that breed,
- AND/OR greater than 50% blood of one of the founding breeds,
and so technically couldn't be produced by breeding two EV pure-breeds together. I'm including them in a separate section rather than rejecting them entirely as they could still have a great deal of potential as a normal pure breed on EV, if the breed both allowed and encouraged outcrossing.

Pintabian (99% Arabian with tobiano) - Arabian outcrosses accepted.
Pony of the Americas - outcrosses accepted to Morgan, Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Arabian, Thoroughbred. Occasionally also accepts outcrosses to Arabian crosses and Welsh ponies.

Hey UB (and Abbey too lol), how do you feel about adding: Appaloosa x Shetland = Pony Of The Americas (also known as POA Pony)? It's a recognized breed, even if it's fairly new compared to others. They're super cute, and would add a Shetland crossbreed to consider, since there's currently none on the list.

The problem I've found with POA is that any of the research I've done indicates there are 3 breeds involved rather than just 2 - Arabian is in the mix along with Appaloosa and Shetland. Do you have any sources that say POA can be just Shetland x Appy?

Hm, I'll look into it in a sec, but I'm pretty sure the founding stallion (like the first POA made) was a Shetland x Appy only.

http://www.poac.org/breed/history.htm

The founding stud was the mix of 3, an Arabian x Appaloosa bred to a Shetland.

I guess that's so. Before now, something I had read said that he was an Appaloosa x Shetland and didn't say anything about Arabs. Well that stinks, I really wanted them, but it looks like they're out of the picture lol

Gypsy Vanner:
x Clydesdale = Drum Horse
x Friesian = Gypsian

If these were possible to breed; I'd so breed them!!!! :O

The Stonewall Sports horse is more of a type bred for a specific purpose rather than an established breed. If anything it looks more like a heavier set Knabstrupper.

I'd find it ideal if each breed was able to be crossed at least once with another breed rather than having multiple for one and none for the other.

Absolutely support Drum horses and Morabs.

seeing that some of the breeds lack associated crossbreeds, i would like to suggest the Friesian Sporthorse. which is a cross between a Friesian and a Thoroughbred or warmblood, in this case a Dutch Warmblood (and maybe even Trakehners?). i don't know much about the breed, despite that it is a recognized breed and has its own association.

also, i totally support Morabs and would just love to see crossbreeds added in general.

Just a quick fix; Arabians crossed with Appaloosas are known as Araloosas, or singular Araloosa.

I think Araappaloosa and Araloosa are interchangeable. Wikipedia says so anyway :)
