I think that stables should have brands, not horses. What horses should have, it's a mark somewhere on their profile page saying something like "Bred in @Brand name@ Stable". This would allow players to know where this horse descend from and who bred them.

Re: permanent brands

It's no different than branding/tattooing real life, pedigreed horses. Yes, the pedigree papers will have who the horse is bred by, and the registered horse usually has a prefix in the name. I.e LMS Crafty Joe.

I'll also note that registered names are almost never changed when the horses changes owners. Generally, the only time it is changed is if the horse hasn't had any foals. Otherwise, it's a pain to track down everyone in order to get pedigrees updated. Even then, there's usually a fee associated with it.

Anyway. Brands are done as a way of identifying the horse's breeder without seeing the pedigree, in the case of well known breeders. Or in the case of certain warmbloods, to indicate that the horse is in a studbook or some such.

The whole thread is about permanent brands, haha...most of what you said is established in other replies here.

Anyway, I'm fine with registered names being editable. Like whoever it was said, I (well actually I'd love this but yknow, I'm pretty much 7) wouldn't be cool with a horse named Farts with no other options. But brands would be awesome, I support 200% .

People, this is about PREFIXES/SUFFIXES not BRANDING. Everyone is talking about branding the horse. Here I have no support because one it would he two much work, and two, as said by Therion, it would stick out like a sore thumb.
And I still don't support not being able to change registered names. And even though we strive to have a realistic as possible game, the pedigrees update the names automatically.

@ UlyssesBlue, actually, I am not 100% satisfied with Bred By. Some of my horses came from my spare account or broodmares or other players (when my EC tokens ran out). Their bred by shown that they came from other players when it is supposed to be me. So yeah, I would like to have prefix/branding because it would be easier to track down my horses instead save down all horses' id because their bred by ID are wrong.

@ Agapi, people usually refers branding and prefix as same thing. Therion is probably first person to think it as actually branding a horse. The Game Version of Branding is prefix. If you play several online games over time, you will see that many game called prefix as branding instead. That's why we usually said branding instead of prefix out of habit.

I am aware of that, because I have played many SIM horse site. And at least two used actual branding on the horse (you could use you're own image, much like you could here on the old EV, but just to add as a branding mark to the horse).
And from what I understood, more than just Therion spoke of actual branding. But I may have read it wrong.

My personal take on prefixes, copied from another thread:

I consider it more akin to a person's last name than to branding, and that is for simple identification purposes. Pretty or not, it is important for responsible breeding, not for stroking egos...I have always hated how people could change a horse's entire name on me after sale, and as a result, I easily lose track of who's who. I almost feel people should have to pay credits to change the name of a horse that has produced foals, or at least the game should update owners of those foals, but I would personally find those things aggravating compared to a way of simply seeing who bred what.

I do NOT agree that prefixes should be deluxe-only or paid features because they are not that way in real life; however, because you would only know them in real life by looking at a ped, I could understand if that were the only place they showed up.

SUPPORT!!! With the inbreeding blocks in the game, I feel some form of this has become necessary to avoiding or at least minimizing frustration.

I like Abbey's idea of not having them automatic at birth, BTW...I feel that would allow me the freedom to distinguish between animals I felt should be bred and animals I felt shouldn't.

I am 100% against horse names becoming permanent. It is far too common (and almost necessary, sometimes) to use the name slot to include information about the horse that you want to be able to see at a glance, but doesn't show up in the description on the My Horses page.

For example, my horses names all start with a letter indicating the treat I have assigned that horse. That way, when I give out treats, the game automatically sorts my horses for me by that first letter, and it makes treat giving so much easier. I also include the total non-specialty stats for the horse, and its average conformation, and then any pattern genetics, since those don't show up in the description.

I need to be able to change my horse's names, since I reevaluate the assigned treat every couple of weeks, to make sure the stats don't get lop-sided. And if I slip up and give the wrong treat to a horse, I sometimes have to adjust the non-specialty total.

Also, when I put a horse up for sale, I put pertinent information about the horse in the name slot, so that a potential buyer can tell at a glance if this horse is worth checking out or not.

If you take away my ability to change names, I'm going to need something to replace that function. Maybe the ability to assign treats to horses, and a customizable information slot, that would be visible on a My Horses or a search page.

I know I am not the only one who uses the name slot in a similar manner.

The prefix is what could not be changed. Not the name, XD

I don't know how it works with horses, but with rabbits, you are not allowed to change the name once it has been registered or bred; you have to leave it as is. For this reason, I have one rabbit that was bred before I got it listed as having the name WRX3 (she had Wrixxie as a barn nickname while I owned her) on pedigrees of her descendants. Nevertheless, I know a lot of people use the name spot on this game as a way of sorting out and labeling which horses are keepers, which are for sale, etc., so I would be completely opposed to making the name permanent as well, because it would bug me to end up with, say, a horse having a permanent name FOR SALE or as a string of genetic code, or something like that.

I was thinking of this as well. Since people can change the names, it's very easy to lose a horse out of sight once their names have been changed. I thought of only one prefix, but then I realized that not everyone uses the same stable name for their horses (i.e. different breeds have a different prefix). I was thinking of, perhaps, it would work like divisions or anything. You'll get one "free" and every other prefix you want, you have to pay for it. And if a horse has been given a prefix, it can't be changed (but the name can).

Anyway, I totally support this!
