Torpid Void

Harper
Harper was broken from her thoughts when she heard a knock on the door. She was about to go answer it, but figured it would be better if she let Louis do it.

Louis
He looked up. Has it been an hour? With a sigh, he stood and made his way to the door. After a moment of just staring at it, he pulled it open slightly and looked out.

Harper
"Hello!" the lady said when the door opened. Her overly cheerful voice hit Harper's ears, making her roll her eyes. "I'm back to check on you two, and to also do a routine check up."

Louis
I'm not even sure if she was repeating herself or not. "Yeah, uh, sure." He opened the door wider, but leaned against the door frame, effectively blocking the entrance (though he wasn't really trying to nor thinking about that). "We're doing fine. The place is nice." Not as nice as my apartment, though.

Harper
"Well that's good to know!" The lady was surprisingly sweet, considering by this time Harper would have guessed she'd be annoyed with Louis. "I also need to inform you that you have broken fifteen of the rules. Normally, there is a three rule-break limit, but Aerow is considering letting you have another chance, as you're new."

Louis
He passively raised a brow. "Huh. That's more than I would have estimated. Interesting. Which rules? It might also be helpful if the rules were explained to me so I can try not to break them. I'd consider myself a generally law-abiding citizen." Well, back home that is. "Who's Aerow?"

Harper
"Well, there is a billboard somewhere in here with all 968 rules... so you can find out for yourself! I forgot to bring the info paper for you, and I can't recite them all from memory." She disregarded the last question.

Louis
"Which rules did I already break?" Louis asked casually, deciding not to press for more information about this Aerow person.

Harper
"Well..." the lady looked at the ground thoughtfully. "Talking back, disrespecting authority, abducting a child that isn't yours, not letting her speak..."

Louis
The corners of his mouth turned into a slight smile, though the emotion behind it wasn't quite clear. Louis straightened and stepped out of the doorway. "I'm not sure what the check up is or how it works, but feel free to come in." 

Harper
The lady smiled and stepped inside. "If there isn't a rule list in here, I can go and get you one."

Louis
He closed the door. "That'd be helpful. I didn't see one, but maybe I missed it." 

Harper
The lady nodded, looking over as Harper came out of her room and stood awkwardly in the hallway. She looked kind of upset, though why, nobody really could pinpoint. The woman smiled at her and proceeded to do a checkup, checking off things on a piece of paper she had.

Louis
"I forgot to ask earlier. What is the currency here? Are there stores? What kind of work is there?" 

Harper
"Oh, well, there's a few options. We don't really have 'currency'? It's like..." she wandered back into the room they were in. "I guess it just all really depends on you. It truthfully is hard to explain... you kind of just have to learn from experience. As for work- that also is different. And hard to explain." She stared at the ground for a moment, looking relatively nervous for a minute. She fumbled with her pen before asking, "What has reality been like?"
