"There are performances happening in all of the parks in the city. Most of them are free. It's really a gamble on what will be going on when we get there. It could be anything really. Music, stand-up comedy, theatre. Last year I went to one and it was just some dude sitting there husking corn. Apparently he wasn't supposed to be there but the group who had signed up had bailed so the time slot was empty and for some reason he decided to do that. He ended up getting kicked out."

Kahlen
"Strange normal, but I guess I'm one to talk," Kahlen said, half paying attention.

Auberon
He nodded slowly, not really hearing what she had said.

Mason
"Hm. Sounds interesting. Let's go," he replied briskly, beginning to make his way toward the door. "They've got music, you said? And anyone can sign up?"

She stood and threw away the napkins she still had in her hand before catching up to Mason. Tim looked bored already and she grinned at him. He didn't really like SummerStage very much, mostly because it wasn't something he would have gone to on his own time. The corn dude had been Tim's favorite from all the years Em had dragged him along. "Yeah, there's usually music. But there might not be a band playing when we get there. As far as I know anybody can sign up, but I'm not sure how far in advance you need to." She shrugged.

Mason
He hummed with thought, pushing open the door and gesturing for Em to exit first. "I'll make you a bet: If I'm not performing with a band at SummerStage next year, I owe you a hundred bucks and my pride. Deal?"

Margot
She walked out of the ice cream shop and back into the afternoon heat, turning her grin to Mason as she walked past him. "Deal. What instrument do you play?"

Mason
"Well, in my old band, I used to play guitar - electric, specifically. But I can also play a couple other instruments too. So... I guess you could say I'm a multi-instrumentalist of sorts."

"Maybe you'll be the next Paul McCartney." Em glanced at the street signs then turned to Tim. She didn't have to ask before he pointed out the proper direction. "Thanks." Em started down the sidewalk. Despite having grown up in NYC, she was still terrible at directions. She knew certain routes by heart, but other than that it was commonplace for her to get mixed up.

Mason
Mason grinned slightly, falling into stride beside Em. "Yeah, maybe. Though, on a somewhat-related note, I currently do not have a guitar, or anything, which is terribly tragic. Do you know if the school has, like, music classes that aren't associated with the school band?" He gazed down at the sidewalk, and, spotting a tuft of grass growing up through a crack, promptly stepped on it.

"Probably. If not, I'm sure there's somebody in the city. And there are tons of music stores. You're bound to stumble across one." Em glanced up at the sky. It was quite blue today, which always put her in a good mood. Then again, so did cloudy days. Noncommittal slightly-cloudy days were typically the most disappointing. Maybe Mom and Dad will take Louis and I over to Long Island to stargaze tonight.

Mason
Mase laughed under his breath, the sound devoid of humor. "Kinda hard to buy yourself much of anything that isn't necessary for survival when you're completely broke and living on your own." Was saying that a smart decision? Probably not. It's fine. It's- Yeah, it's fine. Fine, okay, right, it's fine.

Em looked away from the only cloud in the sky that she had been watching, turning her gaze to the street they needed to cross once traffic died down as she thought over what Mason had said. Tim's been quiet. Where is he? She glanced over her shoulder to see he was a couple feet back, dragging his feet to delay how long he'd have to be at the park. "One second." Em slipped back to Tim. The two discussed for a couple seconds and then Tim shrugged and left. He was going to go get Louis and take him to Em's grandparents' so he didn't have to go to SummerStage. Em returned to the crosswalk and glanced over at Mason. "Okay, back to what you said. Do you have a job? If not, I know a few places that will probably hire you. And you aren't living on the street, are you?"

He didn't remove his eyes from where they were fixed on the concrete at his feet. "No, and no. I live in a motel. It's... nice. Could be worse." But you're living in a basically-abandoned, roach-infested motel, Mason. That's only one step up from living in a tent. It 'could be worse,' sure, but not by much. He pushed his thoughts away with a sigh. "It's fine. I'm gonna be leaving here soon anyway. I'll get a job in Virginia, and it'll be fine."

"Well, you should still get a job. How are you going to get to Virginia without money?" Em decided not to point out how it was a little too obvious it wasn't exactly 'fine.'
