Different art for mares and stallions.

#93843 Posted on 2017-02-18 12:29:28

The title is pretty self explanatory. I'm proposing that mares and stallions for each breed have their own art -- same genes and colors of course, just a different pose.

I've played quite a few games that do this, and I've rather enjoyed that extra bit of variety. It also allows for a little more visual variation for breeds that have very few colors.

I highly expect this to be controversial, especially given the typical reaction to adding foal art, but if you are against this then please do explain why. (: And please don't use financial reasoning, since it's already been said that shouldn't be a factor in rejecting suggestions.

I'm a bit on the fence. I guess I'd like a little variation, but then I really like the Lipizzaner art and I don't want it to change. :P

I guess this could be interesting, but I'd rather have foal art than this.
But I'll support it.

@Raptorfang
Oh I would definitely pick foal art too if I had to choose between the two. xD This would just be extra.

@Dratini
I'm personally not even sure if I 100% like this idea myself. I've always enjoyed having more pretty art to look at but we don't by any means need this.

And I definitely don't think current art should be replaced, just that it could be assigned a sex and then an additional piece could be added for the other sex. So the current Lipizzaner art for example could become the mare art and then a new pose for stallions could be added.

Or, what if instead of a new pose, stallion... um, 'parts' (lol) could be added to the current art for stallies/geldings? Some of the art already has this, so it might have to be removed for the mares.
That might be hard to edit, though.

I have mixed feelings about this, cause while I don't object to the idea overall it would not simply be a matter of more breed art, but more tack art to fit the new poses too. I don't dislike the idea but I dunno how much it would add to gameplay either. *shrug*

I personally like this idea. Foal art would be preferable, as well as future added breeds, but this would be pretty cool.

I'm a little on the fence about this. I really like the art of the breeds I breed the way it is. It's quite possible I wouldn't like the new art (I'm picky), so... on the fence.

i dunno, i was iffy on the new art for the game entirely but it turned out amazing.
i think the extra variety would be cool, and would help distinguish if a horse was female or male before glancing at the statistics of said horse (when first going to look at a foal for example)

If foal art is going to happen then I would rather that be implanted first.

The problem really with mare and stallion art would be that apart from a possible pose, there's not a whole lot of difference between mares and stallions? It would pretty much just be a different pose and I'm not entirely sure the game needs something like that.

With foal art, there's a lot of difference between foals vs adult horses, which is why I'm more open to implementing it.

@Abbey

The thing with the foal art for me is that it's going to serve zero purpose. I'm definitely not against it, especially since it seems to be a popular/often suggested idea. But I only ever visit a foal's page twice: once when it's born/created, and the day it turns three. I'm not sure what ideas you have about foal training or if it will encourage more page visits, but with things how they are now, I'd find foal art far less interesting. No doubt this is different for others, but I personally would get more enjoyment out of images that last several more weeks for each horse. That's just where I'm coming from on this. But I know it'd be a huge undertaking since it'd essentially add up to creating 20 new breeds as far as workload and cost goes, so I totally understand if it doesn't seem worth it to you. (:

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm not implying this should be done instead of foal art, but in addition to it. If anything I know this makes it far less likely, but I thought I'd try anyway. xD

I am not too keen on this idea simply because there's a lot that goes with it. I love the breed arts just as they are and I think the art is pretty redundant for opposing sexes. Maybe just a different colored background stall would suffice? I'm also not too keen on foal art either though. (On another note I am also red/green color blind. Art doesn't affect me like it does others. That's why I learned the genetics as well. On that note please feel free to shush me :D)

The image could just be flipped to face the other way for the different genders? Cut down on actual art work needed while still giving a difference between males and females? For example, make all males face left and all females face right?

^ Came here to suggest exactly that. I see no reason for entirely new art to be created for one gender, but if you wanted some differences they could be flipped for the males, and maybe also have a hint of genitals added, if you wanted that level of realism. Images can be flipped just using code, rather than modifying the art, so this would be a reasonably easy thing to implement.
