is it worth repairing tack ?

#232289 Posted on 2020-12-30 08:44:36

I'm wondering if anybody ever calculated if it's worth to pay for fixing tack found during the rides or maybe it's simply cheaper to sell it back to the shop and buy a new one at 100% from the shop ?

I would say that YES it definitely is worth it to pay for tack fixing!! For 2 reasons, it helps with your horses performance when you enter them into shows and when you have tack on your horses, your horses have a better chance of placing in shows! (:

But that is just my opinion, however if you don't think that spending the funds on your tack to get it upgraded and in better condition that is totally your call, it's your money, your tack and your horses performance.

TO is correct. It is worth it to repair tack. I do it every time it can be done. Just like in real life, tack does help with horses performance. Bad tack can also break and be hazardous to horse and rider. While in game I am not sure if tack can break, I do know from experience that when tack breaks in real life, it can be very dangerous

I understand that it's worth it in theory but I'd be curious to hear from somebody who maybe actually did the calculations and knows from the numbers that it's worth it and how much exactly. Because maybe it's just a minute difference...?

If the tack is upgraded at all, I *think* the valuation would be high enough that it's cheaper to repair than purchase new and upgrade. That said, there IS some pretty cheap 5/5 on the market.

Because you can repair tack infinitely, there's definitely a breakeven point somewhere in which it becomes incrementally cheaper to repair long-term. But I don't know of anyone who has done the specific math.

Hi, I'm Sab and I did math, lol.
I don't pay attention when repairing tack so I have no idea what percentage tack is at if you get it from a ride (I tried to get some just now but "the tack is too rusty and falls apart when you pick it up" so whoops!) But it is $1 per percent of disrepair on bridles, boots and tail guards and $2 per percent of disrepair on saddles.
I believe 0% tack is "broken" and you have to discard it (again never let myself personally get that low), so the bridles and saddles you find on the trails should be at least 1%(possibly higher though). This would mean maximum $99 to repair a bridle and $198 to repair a saddle. The Store cost of a Bridle is $200, and a Saddle $300 (about $138 and $287 if you open a bundle) so repairing the tack is cheaper than buying a new piece of tack at the general store.

Now I'm not sure what the return rate on saddles/Bridles in low repair is but a 100% level 1 bridle nets back $91, and saddle nets back $125 (a little under 1/3 of the purchase price), so you'll never make money if returning old tack to buy new. Upgraded tack is even worse to sell back. Please never do it, lol.

And shameless plug plus fun facts: I run a tack repair raffle in SCC which prompted me to do this math. The Maximum you'd have to spend in a Horse's lifetime if shown everyday for 10 shows is $63k. The minimum is $630. On average tack should be repaired about once a week in order to keep it from breaking and should take between $35 and $350 per horse. All calculations done for a horse with a full set of tack. Level does not make a difference in degradation of tack(but wouldn't that be interesting!)

This has been math time with Sab. If you have questions please submit them for review in our next segment.

I knew someone would have done the maths :)

I Have been following this thread waiting to see the answer! Purely out of curiosity of course as I always just repair my tack about weekly anyway.

-bows- interesting EV Facts specialist at your service.
Also just managed to get a tack from the Mountains at 11% so very worth it to repair!

One of the reasons I was asking was that I tend to get a lot of tack during rides (over time) and then when I get a repair notification during showing my horses I click "repair all". Basically I'm repairing all the found tack alongside the fitted one but in the end I sell all that is not fitted to horses back to the shop because I simply have too much lying around. So Iguess I should sell as soon as I find it, otherwise I pay for fixing it before it gets sold.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I did not think about that if you aren't using the tack since I am constantly using it as I sell my horses fully tacked all the time xD
Also you made me think to check. You do get less money for tack in disrepair. The 11% endurance bridle I picked up (when I finally found it in my tack hoard) will only net back $32. It will take $89 to fix it, and at 100% netback of $91, it would only be a profit of $2. but either way not losing money unless that tack is under 9%!
