Grey Undesirable?

#116327 Posted on 2017-08-01 19:57:13

Hello!

I'm new to Equiverse and am slowly getting the hang of everything. Having played other horse sim games, I'm aware of why clean lines and reasonable breedings are prized in a horse. I have also read that a greying horse is undesirable. If that's true, could someone explain the reasoning behind it? Is it because it replaces the original coat color eventually?

Thank you! :)

You're pretty much spot on. A lot of breeders take color into mind when breeding, but of course gray always gets in the way later. While the horse still has the rare color genes, they aren't visible due to the Gg/GG gene, therefore making them less desireable.

For me, I don't mind the gray gene as long as its a common color under it, such as bay, chestnut, or black in my Akhal-Tekes. In fact, I actually like the gray gene, just not in big doses.

^^yes, you guessed the main reason why greys aren't super popular. Also because they're common from the equine center, same as blacks, bays and chestnuts. As a result those colors aren't aren't as popular either but they're still more accepted than grey as you can breed dilutions in to get a more desirable color. However, just because they aren't as popular doesn't mean you should dump them. There's an increasing number of people who don't mind grey so much (I think mostly due to the fact that the images change depending on their age now, it wasn't always that way). Though in general Gg will sell better than GG since it can be bred out.

Thank you both for replying so quickly! I think the grey looks really pretty, but I can see why unique colors would want to be preserved and that a whole herd of grey horses can get old quick.

If you're in it for the long haul you can typically breed out GG by the 3rd generation :)
