Stats and tack, I believe, but also there is a luck factor in it.

I have a very in depth explanation in my guide to Successful Showing, but it does basically boil down to stats and training level. Stats Should be the highest in the discipline stats, tack adds additional stats to the horse's total in the discipline stats(high level and correct discipline being important), and then a horse's training level affects it's luck factor. Which means a horse has a better chance of winning at a higher Training Level, but not garunteed. If trained every day a horse can reach Level 5 the training level max by age 13.
