More suggestion buttons

#103753 Posted on 2017-05-05 05:15:21

Currently on every suggestion we get two buttons to vote on it: support or no support. Could we change this to something like:
- strongly support (aka "this is the best thing ever, it must happen!")
- moderately support (aka "yeah, that could be useful, but if it doesn't happen it's no great loss")
- neither support nor oppose (aka "I don't mind one way or the other")
- moderately oppose (aka "I'd rather this didn't happen but won't be too fussed if it does")
- strongly oppose (aka "this is terrible and I will be very upset if this happens")

This will allow us to get a clearer idea of the level of support for or opposition to the various suggestions, and maybe also allow Abbey to more easily pick out the suggestions people love.

I mean, what about the percentages of support/no support that is shown on the board.
I mean ot could be helpful, but I honestly don't see the point in it. People can place their feeling on it through the comments.

I sort of do and don't support this (haha!)

I think adding too many buttons complicates things, but I do think there needs to be a button for people who don't 100% support an idea, but also don't 100% disagree with it (and then don't know what to press that will accurately describe their feelings)

Something like a 'neither support or oppose' would work, but I don't think we need to add 'strongly support' or 'strongly don't support' as I think it's a lot of coding for the same answers as a simple 'support' or 'don't support'.

I know the option with a 'neither support or oppose' is just to not vote, but for topics like the Lethal White gene debate, an 'on the fence' option may be more accurate for those who don't care either way or who don't 100% support but also don't 100% oppose either.

I would support a on the fence or neutral choice in the center of support/don't support.

Alternately if you don't have an opinion you just don't click a button ;]
As and in the middle person generally I tend to not select and option unless I feel strongly one way or the other on suggestions. Had I the option I'd probably feel more pressured when visiting suggestions to click a button and make a decision instead of reading the comments to see if I actually agree or disagree. Personally a lot of suggestions sound good on the surface but the details tend to make or break it.

I think that the system now works in that suggestions that would get a lot of neutral responses just don't get answers, so you can tell if a suggestion is something people don't really care about or something they really want/don't want based on how many people have actually selected an option and the percentage between the two. You're essentially saying "I'm on the fence" by not responding to the options, or in my case and probably some others the moderately options of "I don't care one way or the other". You can still comment without selecting a response so discussion of why you're on the fence about a topic can happen before you chose or don't chose.

Alternately to an on the fence option, the ability to "withdraw" your support/not support, since once you've selected an option you're stuck with one or the other(you can switch though!), could be helpful if you don't like how the suggestion is going. I'm still of the mind that people should read through the entire thread first to form an opinion and not select an option unless they really do support or not support it but impulsive clicks happen and minds and suggestions can change.

I feel like having only the two buttons right now helps increase feedback in the thread itself.  If I don't fully agree with something but don't completely disagree with it, I'm more likely to comment and explain how I'm feeling.  I think that when there's more discussion on the topics it helps flesh the initial idea out more or may even help present an alternative idea instead.

Thanks for your feedback, guys! Some excellent suggestions here. I like the idea of changing it to Support/Oppose/Neutral or similar, and disagree that we already get this in a way. When people don't vote on something it could be for a wide variety of reasons. It may be that they've read through it and decided they don't care one way or another, or it might be that they haven't read it at all, which will often happen if the title isn't sufficiently interesting or descriptive enough for the suggestion, or if the suggestion is quite long and wordy.

I also think the ability to withdraw your vote entirely is a good idea.

I'm not really for too many buttons, but the neutral could be helpful.

Normally I only vote if I really think the idea is making playing the game more fun/better for me. Or don't support if I'm really against the idea/think it's redundant.
Oh and even reply if I'm really enthiastic about it or think it could do with some more information.

Any ideas that aren't really doing anything for me, I mostly just skip voting (or not even open it if can be judged by the title).
But I guess you could say -at least from my point of view-  most actual votes are strongly support or oppose, since it got people to actually vote.

Eh no support. We get clearer ideas on the level of support from opinions and ideas in the comments on the board. If people choose not to comment, then it's their loss that they don't get a full say in it. The voting percentage doesn't mean something for sure or won't for sure will happen. Plus, we thrived just fine without this whole button option before.
I just don't see a point in it. Either you want something or you don't. If you're on the fence, either wait to place a vote and comment what you think, THEN decide your vote or just don't vote. That's just what it think. I don't think we need to complicate things :P
