← Back to News

Hi everyone, Abbey here.

I bring some unfortunate news: Equiverse will no longer be receiving development time.

I hope to clarify everything in this post, but if there are any questions, I will try to answer them in the comments.

This may not be a surprise to some of you, but others may be blindsided - and for that I'm sorry. Equiverse has seen a several year decline of activity and revenue, and it is no longer financially viable for development to continue. I personally no longer have the time to work on it as a passion project.

Equiverse will stay online - as is - for as long as it can afford its hosting and domain fees. Assuming it can continue to bring enough revenue to support this, it will remain running as it currently is. If it cannot make the revenue to keep itself hosted, it will be closed. I will try to give warning ahead of time if this happens.

How We're Leaving Things

I will be coding an automated news posting system that posts the event news when each event rolls around. I believe there is also a recurrent issue with "ghost" backgrounds and items getting stuck on deceased horses - I will be making the tool to fix this available for member use.

Moderation

River will no longer be admin of the game. The moderators have been asked whether they would like to stay moderating, and there has been a mixed response so far - we will see what happens.

I don't wish to put any pressure on the mods, it's truly their decision - but just to inform: if they were to choose to step down from moderating, then I would be closing the forums, private messages, and any other place in which a player could post rule-breaking content. Even if activity truly dwindles, I don't want any player feeling harassed or uncomfortable on the game.

Support

Support for the game will mostly cease. Any bugs that are discovered will be left unfixed, any items or horses that get stuck in trades or shows will not be able to be released.

If a player tries to return to the game but is unable to retrieve their login details, they will instead be encouraged to create a new account. If account activation is unsuccessful, they will be encouraged to try a different email address, but ultimately there will be no further support for account loss and sign up.

Support *will* continue for EV Credit purchases as I have a legal requirement to ensure that paying customers are able to access their purchased goods - or receive a refund.

The Future and Other Projects

I am not planning to sell Equiverse because there is the potential that some time, far in the future, I will revisit it in a different format. This is not a promise - I don't want to ignite any false hope - but it's something that has been briefly considered. For that purpose, it would be useful to maintain copyright holder of the assets and systems in place, particularly the game's art.

Some of you may be aware of the other games that I have created with friends and colleagues, but if not, then allow me to introduce you to Lioden and it's sister game, Wolvden.

End of an Era

Equiverse was my first sim game. It began as "Winners", and then had a rename to the much more palatable "Equiverse". The game was first launched in 2006 - nearly 18 years ago!

We've had a lot of ups and downs, a couple of recodes, multiple iterations of breed art, many different showing systems, and plenty more that has changed significantly since we first launched. It's been a truly wonderful journey all the way through.

I would like to thank River for stepping up as admin over the past few years, and for continuing to push for development on the game in that time.

I would also like to thank the moderators that have continued to remain active over the course of the past few years - and indeed Equiverse's lifetime itself.

Finally, I'd like to extend thanks to the players who are still continuing to come and play, who have taken the time to suggest ideas, and stuck around for improvements. I am very grateful for each and every one of you.

Sad, but can't say I'm surprised, seeing as in the few months I have been playing I haven't seen more than 25 people online at one time.

Yes, very sad and I'm a little lost for words... But as a player who recently returned, yes I've seen the game in better/busier times.
Just hope it'll stay a nice place to get away for me from time to time. Would be interesting to see how that goes.

Still, a big thanks to everyone who has always worked so hard on the game and also to the people who'll continue doing so! ♥

As a longtime player from the former version, this is a very sad thing to see happening. I hope it manages to stay running for a long time to come.

Thanks all for everything that has been done to develop it! I'll be hanging around.

To be honest, it feels like a real hard kick in the stomach. As great updates came more recently in the last months, I hoped EV was heading for some kind of better future. But now I think I was just too naive and that I grew too attached to this game.

I still don't know what I should do, but I think I will just hang around. I'm afraid the remaining active players will just disappear in a few days time after reading this accouncement, leaving this game emptier than ever before.

Thanks to the all of you who worked hard on the game to make it better and for all of the updates, it was a great experience! I hope we will be still able to enjoy it for a few years.

it was really hard for me to hear all this, EV has become a regular part of my life over the past 5 years and it's something i look forward to every day.
but thank you for explaining everything to us, and for all the work put into this game. and good luck out there with any future or current projects!

whether or not things change in the future i'll be sticking around here. EV's like home to me, and as long as the house is still standing i've got a place to stay ♥

It's crazy, looking back, that I have been playing this game since before my children were born, and they are 15 (nearly 16) and 14. I have met so many amazing people here over the years and still keep in contact with a few of them. I've watched their own babies be born, graduate college, and amazingly also meet Abbey and her mum. EV has been my comfort game for so long. I've lurked about for years just caring for my pixels and enjoying my time quietly. EV will always hold happy memories for me. I stumbled across EV in the very early stages and have been around to experience her many reincarnations, this place truly is a marvel and a huge accomplishment for you and your team Abbey. From the OG EV'ers, job well done. EV will always and forever be the best sim horse game ever to have ever been. xx

4 years into playing this game, and I didn’t think this would be happening so soon. I’ve made a LOT of great friends, and I have so many memories here. It’s what got me to start my dream of being a digital artist, got me into collecting characters, roleplaying, and many other things. I have grown as a person because of this game. Helped me get through tough times. Although I never very active in the horse side, I’ve been as active in the forums as I could possibly be. I hope EV will still be around for awhile. I can’t imagine life without this game. It means so much to me, and has found a place in her heart. I will never forget about EV. Never. I will always appreciate everything this game has brought me, and what joy it brings me. I started playing in the seventh grade, and here I am a junior in high school. Oh how the time has gone. I will deeply miss having this game open for each and everyday. By far the best and my favorite horse sim game ever. Thank you mods. Thank you friends. Thank you EV. For all the good things and the joy you’ve brought to me. I hope that this is not the end.

This post brought me back out of another hiatus because I want to enjoy EV while it's here. I've been on EV since 2008 and I've changed as a person so much since then! It has been a lot of fun seeing EV grow and change too. I've gone on hiatus here and there because life is rough but EV has always been here to come back to. There are so many wonderful people here that I've loved speaking with and collaborating with over the years. I don't plan on leaving so for those of you who are sticking around too, I look forward to seeing you more ♥

I love this game, and for one will be continuing to play it as long as it is in existence! I love the art, and also love the realism of genetics here! I breed Miniature Horses, probably a not as sought after breed, but as they are my passion and love in real life, it was amazing to find a game that had actual minis, rather than only shetlands! I'm so sad to hear that it's not giving much revenue these days, as I said I will continue to play it till the end!

8 days will mark a full year of me playing EV, and I really grew to love it and its people♥ I absolutely love my SbSb Arab lines, they are my pride and joy, but lately I haven't had as much time for them, so this makes me wish I had more time to thoroughly enjoy them :( I'll still be lurking daily, but not as active as before.

If I could afford it I'd buy 1000 EVC to help support the game, but alas, I have no card.

Would it be doable to open up EV Beta to the public, including code edits, so players can run it themselves? Sure it may break, but that's what a beta site is for xD Then have a coding higher-up to implement it to normal EV to keep the game going better without so much work for 1-2 people, as everyone could chip in. I know it's kind of a paradise idea, but it is possible :D

Ah, this is incredibly disappointing to hear... I fully understand the decision, but it's just so unfortunate because I truly feel this is one of the better horse sim browser games out there, and it is my personal favorite. I haven't been very active the past couple months (I decided to take a short hiatus due to an illness in the family), so I honestly feel a bit guilty that this is happening now. I know I'm only one person, but that's one person less to have helped keep the site more active. :( I apologize for my part in this outcome, however small it may have been.

I've often made comments in other places online (not on other games, just other websites i visit) about this game, hoping to help bring in even a few more people. I plan to keep doing so, because you never know, this site could still potentially see a resurgence, and I really hope it does. It deserves one.

Thank you Abbey and mods, thank you to everyone who put so much work into this game, as well as all the players who made it such a welcoming place. I definitely plan to stick around for as long as the site is still functioning, and as I said, I will continue to tell others about it in case it can make a comeback some day in the future. ♥

While I certainly understand this decision, it's also incredibly sad to hear. I'd also been on the side of hoping that all the new features and changes recently (the addition of conformation impacting shows; the new stat levels for shows; the grade horses; improved/fixed marking art...) all spoke to a good future for the game. I *still* hope for a good future for the game, even if it's a passive one.

While I've occasionally looked at other sim games, none have managed to hold my interest the way Equiverse has, and I'm happy to have had this as a constant source of enjoyment for years. I hope to still enjoy it for more years to come, as long as it remains possible to leave it up.

Good luck on all other current and future endeavors for you, for River, for all of the mods. (I hope that some of the mods are willing to stick around, as I know many people love the social aspects of the game, but it makes complete sense that those features cannot remain if they're unmoderated, and I certainly respect all of the mods making their own best decisions as to what they want to do.)

Thanks Abbey for everything throughout the years. I've been here since 2006, and have grown alongside EV. It has been a major part of my life, a place where I have met lifelong friends. You have been someone I've always looked up to, and I'm happy I got to have you and Equiverse in my life for these past 18 years.

From being a 12 year old know-it-all, to becoming a mod, and to moving onto other things, EV has always been there. All that you have done with this website has really made a positive impact to me and although I haven't been very active recently, it always feels like coming home when I login.

Thank you again, and I can't wait to see what the future brings for you, whether or not EV is on that list ?

Here's some images I've had saved throughout the years if anyone wants to take a walk down memory lane.

Oh gosh......

I'm shocked at this. I honestly don't know what I'd do without Equiverse. :(

It's been the coolest and most awesome Horse Sim Game I've EVER played.

I'm so honored and privileged to have been a member for going on 15 years (10/30). Met so many awesome friends over the years. I love all the amazing features this game has! The breeds are wonderful, the artwork is amazing, and the people. ♥

I hope that EV will be able to stay going on for years.

Don't worry, I'm like a captain of a ship; staying till the end. ♥
This game has helped me with my mental health over the years. That's why I strive to be the best I can be on here and in my real life. Will continue to breed AWESOME horses and be the best friend to anyone who needs a shoulder to cry on!
