Why board horses?

Is there a real reason for boarding your horses in another persons stable? I have several (around 12) horses that aren't boarded anywhere and there is nothing different that I've noticed other than I don't have to waste money on boarding fees. I was just wondering if there is something that happens that I've missed?

There are certain things you cannot do unless your horse is boarded in a Stable, Showing and training I believe.
