I've been messing around lately with sketching, outlining, shading, etc. Just whatever to find my way around. I took a couple week break and came back to color in a character of mine into it to see how it looks.

Here's the result;;

Honestly, I like it. But, I wouldn't mind critiques or advice for it because I'm a complete self-taught beginner and this is far from perfect.. I struggled alot trying ot figure out where to shade and highlight ;P

In order to shade and highlight you need to know what direction the light is coming from. Once you figure that out, highlight the part the light would touch the most *the parts that stick out) and shade the parts that the light would hit the least (shadows behind the part that sticks out, and the concave parts of the horse.) One suggestion on the horse itself is that horses have a little nub below their bottom lip, and a more severe chin groove.

Good job^^

This is pretty good for you being a beginner! The anatomy looks great c:

However, it would be nicer if there were lineart on this. Or perhaps just more vivid shading to make it pop out of the background more. Also, the eye could use a bit more detail. Maybe try looking at some photos of eyes to help you out? And maybe adding some darker lines outlining the eye to separate it a bit from the horse's head would look nice. I highly suggest looking up some shading tutorials on DeviantArt. Your shading looks like a nice start for a beginner, but it seems a little plain or simple and the shadows don't exactly line up in the right places. Overall, keep at it and you'll get the hang of it in no time! :D
