Your dream farm

#92371 Posted on 2017-02-10 18:07:05

So I'm just wondering, in a hypothetical perfect world where you had all the time, money and resources you required, plus adequate market, etc, what would your dream farm be like? What horses or other animals would you breed/keep? What would your breeding projects and other goals be? What would they train in? What would your farm be like?

For me, I would have a little mountain homestead, where I would breed gypsies and their crosses. I'd cross the pure gypsies with American Cream Drafts to get the champagne gene, then cross the result back to pure gypsies and selectively breed for strong bone, height, and tons of hair/feather, with nice colours to boot. My ultimate aim would be to meet the standard gypsy or drum horse conformation with some champagne horses. I'd train my horses up as all-rounded riding horses, and they'd be great for trail rides up in the high country. I'd also train them for light driving work, so they can pull a buggy or similar. I would also keep a dog or two, but just as pets. They wouldn't be working dogs, or for breeding. I'd also keep chooks or ducks for eggs.

i would have Icelandics, and i'd save and re-home slaughter horses (with a policy that i'd take the horse back if the new owner couldn't keep it).

i'd have a few hundred acres so that i could grow my own hay as well. a nice open, airy, light barn with stalls that the horses could see each other from. a few big pastures as well as some smaller paddocks and dry lots. automatic waterers outside with heaters in them to keep them from freezing. obviously i'd want a nice indoor arena, as well as a round pen. i'd like an outdoor arena, an oval track, and a straight track. of course i'd love to have lots and lots of trails, too.

i'd probably have a few chickens and ducks, some sheep, alpacas, and a cow (and a reindeer because why not?).

i would absolutely NOT have wooden fences. yes they look pretty but omg the up-keep on that much wooden fencing is a full-time job. i'd have that pvc stuff that LOOKS like wood (black, of course).

I love the reindeer! I admit I'd love to have a moose. I'd domesticate it and teach it to be ridden. It's been done!

I would breed and train Haflingers and Ford horses. I would probably train them in dressage, trick riding, and driving. I would also raise Nubian goats, various breeds of chicken, Zebu cows, and various breeds of rabbit (possibly Dutch, Rex, and New Zealand and probably cross-breeding.) This farm would also probably be somewhere in Washington state because that is my dream place to live.

I would probably have just one or two horses on my dream farm. They'd probably be whatever cutie needed a home; I'm not much into actually riding!

I'd also love a goat and a couple of miniature dairy cows, in addition to chickens and maybe some ducks/geese.

Mostly my "other animal" focus would be on dogs. I'd love to breed standard poodles and/or doodle crosses and compete in agility, rally-o and do therapy work.

I would have a huge hobby farm for my fantasy farm (honestly I do plan for this in real life hahaha)
I'd have a couple horses. Doesn't matter on the breed, as long as they are sweetie pies that hang around and are definitely broke to ride. I'd force my bf to like riding again haha
I would soooo have ducks. I love ducks so much. And chickens! Free eggs are awesome in my books!
Ive really been wanting cows again. I have the land to keep them at my parents but it would be awesome if I just had them on "my own land".
But anywho, I would definitely get my first dog that I own myself if I had a farm. I've owned a dog myself before but I didn't have to pay for his food/etc. . But having another dog would be sweet! I want a border collie or a mix like my last dog(he was a border collie/blue heeler)
Also I'd have a bajillion cats cos I do believe I am a crazy cat lady XD I would take my two cats with me. buuut, I probs would get more cos I doooo love cats haha

Also, Ulysses, I do believe that is photoshopped. But in British Columbia, where I live, riding a wild animal such as a moose is illegal. If that photo is real, that is quite saddening.. especially considering I don't believe a moose would ever let a human on his/her back given their instincts.

There have been documented cases of moose being domesticated, although it's not common. There are even breeding farms. I don't know if those two photos are photoshopped, but if they are it's done well enough that I can't tell. But I'm sure I'm not an expert.

Riding a wild animal is another matter though. That would be cruel.

Ooh, I would have a smaller barn, maybe 8 stalls, honestly to keep me from owning more horses than I could really work with and enjoy. It would have a hay loft over the feed room. I'd have 4 large pastures surrounding the barn to rotate the horses through with automatic waterers with buried pipes in each. They'd be double planted with a winter and summer grass, with a few trees in each. Sheds in the pastures would have doors on both large sides and windows on the small sides so they could be breezy shade in the summer and warm and dry in the winter. I'd have a covered arena and round pen with that snazzy footing that doesn't get dusty. I will probably live in a small shack next to my fancy barn. It would probably be on the western side of Oregon or northern California.

I would breed Arabians and their crosses. I'd start out with a couple of stellar CMK mares. End up with some pure blood foals from them, a couple of Anlgo Arabians, and maybe cross one to a POA for a super Araby spotted pony. That foal might be bred to a Welsh C too, as I love their movement. They would be sport horses (well ponies mostly). I would compete in combined driving and eventing with them. I'd also probably have one grey Shire to continue my commercial carriage work on weekends and special events. I love commercial driving, but it's just not practical as a full-time job. At some point in time I also want to own and train a mustang straight from the BLM and I want an Icelandic, but I wouldn't be focusing on those breeds my whole life. All the horses would be out on pasture 24/7 except for injuries and the night before an early show.

I would also have a sheep (a Valais-Blacknose, check them out, they're super cute) and a Holstein cow to milk every day. Oh and a few Canadian Geese - not sure if those are legal to own in Oregon, but they are in Texas. Of course my cat and dog would be there with me and I'd probably snag a couple of feral cats to keep my barn rat-free. I would also have a maid to clean my house, I don't mind caring for the horses myself. I would open up my own tack store where I could sell all of the items I actually like to use on my horse but are super hard to find in the US. I'd also sell the regular stuff, since no would would buy my weird tack. And we'd stock some Breyers, I love my plastic ponies.

I'd almost say that my dream farm is pretty generic lol. My dream farm would be an area that is nothing but green grassy hills as far as the eye can see, There is a Bid red barn/stables that can hold 10/16 horses(or more!). There will be washing stations, a large tack room with have western, English, and driving tack. There will be large corrals with white wooden fences. There will also be a few large round corrals. The animals here would be Horses; There will be mainly gypsy vanners who will be bred for their feathering and amazing colors. There will also be a large number of cows mostly Angus/Herford mix, and just one dairy cow. There will be free range chickens roaming the farm and a few peacocks. there will be just a few farm cats roaming around keeping the mouse population down and a Border Collie or two.

Ah, dream farms. I would do at least a good 300 acres. Solidly 100 for up to 20 horses to prance around. Definitely gypsies, clydesdales, and drums. Their territory would be fenced in and the whole property would be naturally fenced in with about 20 foot-thick treeline and a simple fence on the inside. Another 100 would be farm land and the last 1/3 would be the house, two barns, couple work sheds, and all that fun stuff.

I'm not vegan so I have no problems raising animals for food, and I would have a bull, but never more than two cows at one time. Bouvines need just as much affection as horses, especially if you're going to use their milk and meat.

If I ever cut down on the number of horses I might try a deer or an elk. That's a lot of big creatures, man. Especially since a good part of my farm day would also be split between a roost of chickens, a decorative pond for seasonal ducks, at max 5 goats, maybe a rabbit hutch. OH MY GOSH A LLAMA. I COULD OWN A LLAMA. Then probably some rescued, neutered dogs romping around. Basically a free range rescue farm, with mild fencing for the sake of territory.

My dream farm would consist of a one story house that I would live in and there would be huge pastures and a clean, fancy barn with an office. I would train and buy/resell rescue horses and I'd give lessons. I would also have goats and cattle. I'd train horses to do eventing and basic western and english. I'd try to breed my dream horse (TB/Percheron). It would be in Oregon.

I'd have a lesson program with *only* chestnut Arabians. I'd have a boarding option, too. The main barn would be an 8 stall, with 1 stall converted into a tack room and another stall converted into a cross tie. I'd have another barn just about a hundred feet away, but with 10 stalls that had pens attached. I'd have 4 more pastures that were 1 acre each.
I'd have 2 round pens, both 60' in diameter. The 3 arenas would consist of a 250' by 150' covered and lighted jumping arena. Another arena would be 125' by 90' for a warmup ring when we had shows and clinics, or for a spare arena if the larger ones were being used. The final arena would be a 200' 150' covered and lighted arena for flatwork, lessons, etc. I'd have a 10 acre cross country course that would double as a trail.
The whole property would be in Ontario, Canada. On the property, we'd have a used tack store with feed, shavings, etc for the boarders.
I'd also take in project horses and resell them to forever homes.
Board would be $250 for a stall in the main barn, $300 for a stall with a turnout pen, and $200 for a pasture shared with 4 other horses. For a jumping lesson with me, it'd be $50. For a dressage lesson, $65. For a flatwork lesson, it would be $40. To school on the cross country course, $75.

I would live on the property and be a forensic psychologist, only after going to college at UC Irvine.

This was fun. I love talking about aspirations!
