What do you do?

Weeelll, hello! I have been here since the old EV, but was not very active on the forums until the new one, LOL!

Who am I? I am a student with a long-term goal of archaeolinguist (using linguistic and archaeological evidence to re-create human history). I will be earning my Associate in International Studies at the end of the semester, and then transferring to a university to study for a double bachelors degree (long story). I plan to go on to grad school, but I do not know yet if I will be pursuing a doctorate directly, or if I will do a short masters program and take a break, since my dream school is the University of Edinburgh (YAY for studying abroad!!!), and their standards are high, so the acceptance rate is only, like, 10%. Still, even if I tried and did not get accepted immediately, I would TOTALLY try again, LOL!

Currently, though, I have a herd of long-eared fur babies and three jobs while I am working on my undergrad studies...I work in two different libraries and as a Spanish tutor. I also like to write. I LOVE to write!!! I am a huge fan of creative writing, and research papers aren't too bad, either, LOL! Guess that's a good thing, because part of graduate studies and my future career is having to write...a LOT!!!

Right? I feel like I could talk about it for hours too. My favorite example is golden rice. They added beta-carotene to the rice because children were getting really sick because they were lacking beta-carotene in their diet (somewhere in southeast asia) so they just modified the rice genome to produce a little bit of it and boom. No more sick kids. But then on the flip side I'm terrified of the amount of control Monsanto has over our food and the way they treat the people who produce for them. So I am really excited that you're studying this. I hope you go on to do big awesome research projects that help us all figure it out.

I wish I could afford to eat organic but instead I just obsessively wash my vegetables. I hope I'm doing it well enough... :/

UC Davis is an awesome school. I almost went to UCLA for my graduate work. Yeah living expenses creep up on you. That's part of why we didn't end up in California. It's way too expensive to live there as a student. Idaho is much cheaper X) I think in some fields you can qualify for living stipends as part of your degree program. My advisors told me not to commit to a graduate school unless they had a faculty member who could guarantee me full funding and a living stipend. I ended up just getting a job for university instead, which you might look into because usually they waive tuition costs for their employees. Or apply for grants! I think the NSF GRFP has a category for agriculture microbiology, and it's like 30k a year.
But you probably know all of that anyway. Sorry to be throwing you unsolicited advice haha! I just remember the anxiety of wondering how the heck I was going to pay for graduate school, and I really hope you can find a way because you could do really important research!

Silver I missed your reply.
That sounds like a really cool degree program! Do you have a particular civilization in mind that you want to recreate histories for?
Good for you working full time and doing full time school. That sounds tough.
I totally think you should try for Edinburgh! Go for it! :)

Meadowlarke: Your work/degrees sound super interesting! I'm considering doing a Masters in Bioinformatics but I'm not too sure on it yet. How do you like it? My math prof last year is the head of the department and the program so I was going to speak to him about it

I'm currently a student! Doing my Honours Bachelor of Science in Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, with a minor in Mathematical Science! Going to be switching to an Honours Bachelor of Science in Bio-Medical Science with a double minor in Mathematical Science and Business Economics, next year possibly (Might switch a minor not sure yet!).

Also, I'm the Vice President for the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Society at my university, organise meetings and such with that. I was also selected to be President next year so that's cool I guess. I've applied to some research positions for the summer, hopefully I get one of those but we'll see. I've applied to work on research with angiogenesis & chemotherapy biomarkers, and tissue & mesenchymal stem cell engineering of equines!

I just graduated from a university with a Biology Degree, concentration in Environmental and a minor in Earth Systems Science. And I just got a Field Biologist job!

In my free time I workout (weightlifting) and ride a couple times a week. I used to compete in the AQHA circuit but couldn't afford it while in college, hoping to get back into within the next two years.

And just booked my wedding date/venue :)

Meadowlarke,
My first love is fiction. I've bounced around to different genres a lot, but what I've found is what I really love is literary writing. Before anyone gags, the essence of literary writing is that it's making a comment upon human life. I love getting my characters and the setting and situation down on paper so I can dig into human life and make meaning from them. As fun as genre pieces can be to read, being a bit of a creative writing snob, I find myself getting aggravated with anything that's just supposed to be entertainment. I like for there to be a point to everything other than it being fun for certain people to read. I don't want to become a full time writer (few people can actually make it that way), but I have a few ideas that I would like to get published through traditional publishing houses.

I also write poetry. I won't get into that too much because I know most people are repulsed by poetry for whatever reason. I'm not quite as serious with my poetry. Typically it's more of a personal tool that I use for when I'm going through a rough spot in life and I need to figure out why I'm feeling a certain way. I do have an idea for a collection or two that I would like to self publish with poetry. As much as I would love to have my poetry published through a publishing house, the market for poetry simply isn't there, so I would much rather keep all control of it.

If anyone wants to read my work, you can see some poetry and short micro fiction pieces on my blog https://marylouview.blogspot.com/.

I'll be 19 years old in May, and I'm a high school (homeschool) graduate. Right now I'm assessing what I want to do. I'm hoping to take photography classes at the local art school, along with having my grandmother (a popular equine photographer), teach me a few tricks. We both use Canon cameras, so that's a plus.

I also am planning on volunteering at a nearby horse rescue, as their main photographer. Along with helping out with fundraisers, adoption events, walking dogs, and exercising horses.

I plan to publish my first fiction book in Summer of 2018. It's been in the works for over 6 years. There's 4 books in the series, but book one will be released in 2018.

I'm also studying barn management, equine health and care, and English Hunter Jumper. My friend Kristie will be helping with the hunter jumper, while my mom is teaching me the other stuff. I already know a lot, having owned horses (along with my parents) all my life. I first rode a horse along with my dad when I was six months old, on his Belgian Warmblood, Bob.

I live with my parents, and don't plan on moving out. I have Epilepsy, PTSD, Anxiety, Bipolar, Mild Autism, Depression, and Developmental Coordination Disorder. I know it's a lot, but most of it is well controlled, due to medication and self-control.
I can't go to college due to my learning disabilities, but I'm perfectly happy studying in other ways, and being taught by friends and my family.

oh hey.

i currently teach preschool, but am waffling about leaving for a 'real job' where i can use the college education that i'm in debt from. But i love my job so I'm still not totally decided.

My dream job is to be independently wealthy and raise poodles and doodles, so I clearly need some sort of adult job eventually!

This thread seems super fun, I love to talk about myself haha!

I'll be 14 at the end of March. Currently I'm studying in the 7th grade. I ride horses twice a week (I wish I could ride more!) and will soon start schooling 2 really adorable young horses with a friend. Another thing I absolutely love is photography, I don't have a camera yet buy I try to learn everything I can before finally getting one. I'm interested mostly in equine but also wildlife and portrait photography. (I also really like to chat but I often make grammar mistakes as English is not my first language). :)

This is pretty dang interesting :D

I currently work in research and development. My focus is Hydrology so I basically just play with fluids all day. To get here, I majored in Chemical Engineering and did research in biomass and agriculture. My dream is to be a Disney Imagineer cause I'm a huge Disney nerd.

In my free time I lurk on EV, bug my animal children and go on fun adventures with the boyfriend.

Thanks Meadowlarke! Scrubbing your produce with a bristled brush for 30 seconds and rinsing thoroughly is what one of the studies I read recommended. Of course it's hard to do that with small things like berries or cherry tomatoes though.

Everyone else's jobs/classes sound so much more interesting than my job. D:
I am a seamstress and embroiderer at Stuffed Animal House. I work between making display animals that are native to North America and embroidering small hoodies for stuffed animals (my job sounds adorable, right? Lolol) And on the side I make some money off of digital art commissions.
I have wished about going to school for graphic designing but I don't really have money for that D:

I'm currently in school working on my Undergraduate in Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education.

As for my job, I am currently unemployed as I was working as a Paraeducator (teacher's aid) last Fall but got laid off due to budget cuts. I've been very unsuccessful in finding a job, so as of recently, I've decided to start Real Estate school and become a licensed realtor. Since I have 1.5 years away until I graduate, I figured this option would be best as I can continue doing real estate while working as a teacher and have a job during my summers off. I suppose it runs in the family as my mother is a realtor and prior to me moving to South Carolina, I worked as an assistant to Tennessee's top real estate agent.

I like to keep myself busy. :)
