What do you do?

#92083 Posted on 2017-02-09 14:38:59

So I've been scrolling through some old forum threads where some of you mention new exciting job or education changes as they happen in your lives, and I thought it would be fun to ask:
What do you do?
(Of course, keep it a little vague so we protect everyone's privacy and personal information)

Are you a student? What are you studying/want to study? Do you work? Do you dance? Do you run marathons?

I think it would be nice to get little snippets about who my EV community is now that I'm back in the game :)

I'm a grad student studying library and information science. I work at a bundle of libraries and will hopefully be graduating in about 1.5 years and getting my first real job as a librarian. :)

I am currently unemployed having recently moved home from three years living overseas. No idea what I want to do with myself at the moment... so looking for a temporary job 'til I figure it out. I studied physics (astronomy) and mathematics.

I'm a wife & mom. I'm in my 40s. I'm disabled so I can't work. I'm sort of the family secretary so keeping everyone organized can feel like a full time job sometimes. I enjoying crocheting; video, computer & mobile games & spending time with my family. I'm also a huge Godzilla fan.

I'm a stay at home mom of 6 loving, obnoxious, gorgeous humans. Im in my 30s, we live on a small farm and raise various livestock for regenerative purposes. I run the 4-H club out here and am an active advocate for special needs youth.

I play EV because it de-stresses me and gives me a sense of control in life which is difficult with children and farming, lol.

Looking forward to knowing more about you as well.

I am studying creative writing and have an editorial internship with my university's literary journal. My cousin gets married in 9 days and I'm a bridesmaid. I don't have time for anything else nowadays. XD

I am a high school senior who is finding out if I got into the university I've been hoping for tomorrow (Friday).

I got in! So I'm going to be majoring in animal sciences (equine) with hopes to continue on to Vet school.

I'm a junior in college, studying Food Science. I'm considering going to grad school because I'd like to work for a nonprofit or the USDA doing research on GMOs. So many people either assume they're bad or insist they're safe, when the reality is we just don't know because barely any legit research has been done on them. Theoretically, GMOs could solve world hunger and help with poverty because food prices could be lower. But they also might increase cancer risk or have other unintended side effects that we're not aware of yet. I think the potential is pretty exciting though, because genetic modification isn't just a way to increase food production but it can also make food taste better and be healthier for us.

If I decide grad school isn't for me, I'd like to work for a pet food company, or any company that's doing something interesting with food. A lot of my classmates just want to work for one of the big companies like Kraft or General Mills because they'll get paid well but it's more important to me to not be bored.

Oooo cool idea for a thread - I LOVE reading about everyone!

I'm in my late 20s early 30s and am going back to school for a career change into Nursing! I'll be finding out within a month if I got into my preferred program. Meanwhile I'm taking some of the non-nursing science classes to make future life easier :)

I currently work at a long-term care center geared towards elderly residents who have psychological struggles in addition to the standard dementia/Alzheimer's. I also am a single mom to my duckling, so I do a lot with the kiddo.

I read all the things, wax philosophical, cook, yoga, lift, and hike with the duckling strapped to my back. Fridays are designated dance party (for duckling and I) day!

This is so fun! Thank you guys for posting!

losteh, that's really cool. My fiancé works alongside a lot of librarians and library science graduate students. I had no idea it was such a complicated field until he started that job!

Almare, what do you think you want to do with physics and math? I myself studied math for my undergrad, and I have a lot of friends who were physics or math majors.

Lucifer, I wish I'd spent some time as general studies. How else would you get to check out all the options! What do you like so far?

Valzed, that does sound like a full time job. I have a hard enough time keeping track of myself! Why Godzilla?

Cadillac that's a lot of humans. I feel like taking care of one dog is a lot for me! It's cool that you run 4H :) I was thinking about getting involved in the club where I live.

White Rose, I'm excited for you for your cousin's wedding! My future sister-in-law studied creative writing. What do you like to write?

kimtia what kind of reservations? Like for travel?

nebula that sounds like an AWESOME job. Do you get to sample product? ;)

cat I hope you get in!! That's exciting.

SueHeck I think that's awesome. I remember feeling confused when we talked about GMOs in some of my classes. The culture where I live really encourages us to avoid them, but at the same time GMO technology has been providing Idaho with potatoes that don't require pesticides, and that seems like a really big deal to me. I think there's a lot of room for research there, and it could make for a really cool graduate project. Maybe someday I'll read a journal article that you've written about it ;) Do you have any leads for grad school?

Starfall that sounds like an incredibly rewarding job. What's your favorite part?

Ducky good for you going back to school! I have a friend who went back to school for nursing and she said it was a challenge. I believe in you! I hope you get into the program. I also like cooking, yoga, lifting and hiking! :) I also like that you have a designated dance party day.

About me: I have a bachelors in Applied Scientific Modeling Mathematics and minors in Fisheries Resources and Natural Resources. I currently work full time for a University math department managing the entry level classes and supervising grad students and tutor staff. I'm also part time working on my masters in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. My research is in thermal ecology, and our research station is in Mozambique Africa. I only get to travel to it for a few weeks during the summer though because of my job. I'm also a certified 200 hour RYT and I teach yoga in the mornings.
I'm getting married in September to the love of my life (I think our date is one day after Abbey's anniversary), and we have one giant chocolate labradoodle named Ricochet. This spring I'm going to get 7 chickens (the max I'm allowed in our city limits). I swim, run, lift, hike, fly fish, paint, cook, and play music with my fiancé.
I am sad to say I developed allergies to horses as I was growing up, so I play EV to get a little bit of my horse fix :)

Thanks :) Potatoes that don't require pesticides are a great example of the divide in public opinion right now. Generally to achieve that, genes are added that make the crop produce a substance that's lethal to the insects. So anti-GMO people are like, well how do we know it's not lethal to us too? Which is a valid concern but at the same time, we do know that most pesticides in large amounts are lethal to humans and in small amounts can make us sick or cause cancer. And there are good studies out there showing that just washing produce the way most people do (which is not as thoroughly as we should) doesn't remove all traces of pesticides. So I agree with you, not having to spray our crops with pesticides is a huge deal. I could talk about this stuff for hours lol.

For grad school I'd hope to go to UC Davis or a school in the Midwest. It's mainly the cost that worries me. Even if I get a GA position with a tuition waiver, there's still the living expenses and books and all of that. I'm lucky that I've only had to take out very small loans to pay for my undergrad but my brother is a senior in high school so when he's in college too my parents won't be able to help as much. But I think if I decide not to go right away I'd still go in a few years, after I work and save up some money. My advisor and the other professors who know me are all encouraging me to go because I love research so much!

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! Are you having it somewhere special?
