So I've been scrolling through some old forum threads where some of you mention new exciting job or education changes as they happen in your lives, and I thought it would be fun to ask:

I'm a grad student studying library and information science. I work at a bundle of libraries and will hopefully be graduating in about 1.5 years and getting my first real job as a librarian. :)

I'm a junior in college, studying Food Science. I'm considering going to grad school because I'd like to work for a nonprofit or the USDA doing research on GMOs. So many people either assume they're bad or insist they're safe, when the reality is we just don't know because barely any legit research has been done on them. Theoretically, GMOs could solve world hunger and help with poverty because food prices could be lower. But they also might increase cancer risk or have other unintended side effects that we're not aware of yet. I think the potential is pretty exciting though, because genetic modification isn't just a way to increase food production but it can also make food taste better and be healthier for us.

Thanks :) Potatoes that don't require pesticides are a great example of the divide in public opinion right now. Generally to achieve that, genes are added that make the crop produce a substance that's lethal to the insects. So anti-GMO people are like, well how do we know it's not lethal to us too? Which is a valid concern but at the same time, we do know that most pesticides in large amounts are lethal to humans and in small amounts can make us sick or cause cancer. And there are good studies out there showing that just washing produce the way most people do (which is not as thoroughly as we should) doesn't remove all traces of pesticides. So I agree with you, not having to spray our crops with pesticides is a huge deal. I could talk about this stuff for hours lol.
