Correct terms for horse colours?

#89171 Posted on 2017-01-26 10:12:59

Hello!

I'm supremely interested in a few things about horse colors, or rather, the correct terms to translate the genotype into the horse's colour.

+ Flaxen (ff) and Mealy (Pp/PP) only show on non-black horses, or ee. If you were to have an Ee/EE horse that does carry flaxen (ff) or pangare (Pp/PP), would said horse still be called Flaxen or Mealy black/bay/etc.?

+ In reverse, Silver (Zz/ZZ) is only expressed on horses carrying black (Ee/EE), so would a chestnut-based horse be called Silver Chestnut?

+ Is sooty (STYsty/STYSTY) also expressed on chestnut-based (ee) coats? If yes, that would be Sooty Chestnuts etc.?

+ On the matter of chestnuts (ee), why are some called chestnut and others called sorrel? There doesn't seem to be logical explanation behind that?

+ I also wondered if it is still a bug if FF does not show up in a genotype? I have a number of horses where it is missing, but neither of the parents seems to carry flaxen in that case either.

+ Certain markings/patterns seem to be separated by commas since today and others not, is that on purpose or a bug? I have some Tobiano Splashs, where it is still 'one' marking, but Tobiano and Sabino are now separated, to name just one example.

Thank you for reading/answering

Kind regards,
Nerii

Flaxen nope, but mealy yes.
i.e. flaxen palomino (ee Crcr ff), mealy palomino (ee Crcr Pp), buckskin (Ee Aa Crcr ff), mealy buckskin (Ee Aa Crcr Pp)

Silver is a no.
i.e. Chestnut (ee Zz)

A sooty chestnut is called a chestnut, but you can see the sooty color on the horse. Also sooty can hide on a black horse.

Sorrel is the same as chestnut, just a variation in color name because of how the English language works (just a fun way to confuse people)

Don't know about the FF problem.

I think it is part of the new update.

Thanks!

Because I have a few Mealy's that are genetically mealy but don't have the name, needed to figure out which horses I should report for bug. Likewise for the sooty's.

And I did know that they are the same colour (sorrel and chestnut), but I've had a few Paint and Mustangs foal that were sorrel, and then others were chestnut, hence the curiosity, as it seems unrelated to specific genotypes.

*slides in casually*
does anyone think that, even though sorrel and chestnut are the same, sorrel = rarer?

Sorrel on the game is a chestnut pangare. That's why it's rarer.

I know because I bred one.
