So how do you organize?

#85354 Posted on 2017-01-04 16:09:35

Big question for ya'll!

How do you organize your pairs/breeds/etc?

I have each breed in a division, and each pair has a specific symbol by their name along with my "p." I also put them into a powerpoint so I can keep it straight.. Which doesn't always work.

I've seen so many other ways to organize these types of things and I'd like to know how you do it and how it works! c:

I have all my horses ages 3-16 in one division, and then 16+ in breed specific divisions. I keep their pairs written in their notes.

I might have to start putting something in their names once more of them reach breeding age.

This is how I do my spare:

Each generation, starting with first, has a letter before their name. For example, gen 1 horses all have an A, gen 2 will all have a B, gen 3 will all have a C, ect.
Then, I give each pair a number. For example, one couple will have 1's in their names, another will have 2's, ect.
So, a generation one horse might have this before his name, and so will his mate: A1, A3, A9, ect. A generation 2 horse and his mate might have B3, B6, ect.

I just started breeding recently so I'm still working on better organization but right now I have a spreadsheet that lists all of my horses I want to breed, with columns for their breed, sex, specialty, confo, color, and genes. I keep it sorted by breed, then specialty, then confo. That makes it easy to find pairs and then I look at the colors and genes to make sure the pair will produce a variety of foals.

i don't do anything visible on here (except for my projects, where i do mare 1 and stallion 1 and mare 2 and stallion 2, lol) but i do keep a very organized excel spreadsheet for each horse and do pairs and updates there.
for each horse, i have name, age, stats, specialty, and level (updated every week).
i pair them based on ages and stats since stats are all i'm after.

i'm not someone who's ever been super into the horse side of the game. i'll do it and breed, but i'm not intense about color and stuff. i only get pride from stats.

Generally, each breed has a separate division, though my quarter horses have grown so much in number that I split them into foundation and non-foundation pairs. I keep all foals in a separate division grouped together, moving them when they hit 3 years into the proper division. Horses that have passed their last breeding also get moved into a retirement group.

With names and pairs I recently adopted Maple's way of pairing, I used to do something slightly different.

Old way: 1.03 || 1 = generation, 03 = pair number.
New way: 031 || 03 = pair number, 1 = generation.
In all, my horse name would be 031η. horse name | confirmation

I keep excel spreadsheets only for breeding purposes, marking the horses in each pair (only do this with foundation groups/large paired groups) along with their confirmations. I use the spreadsheets to record all confirmation numbers, create the pairs from those numbers, and then I record the stats at each breeding of the parents, the stats of the foal at birth, as well as the confirmation numbers of the foal.

i dont really pair anyone up (i did with my shetlands, by color then stats)

but my organization for breeds is simple.

I have divisions set up for their breed and discipline.
So, endurance chincos
dressage chincos
racing chincos, etc.

I do mine by breed; for my QHs they are further separated by Project i.e my Jackalope Project, Phoenix Project, Mythical Beasts Project which all have their own goals/origins.

In the name name if the horse I do my brand, then breed, then generation, then pair number i.e. AG.QH1.01 = Aglet's Geekdom Quarter Horse Foundation pair number one.

CD = Clydesdale
MI = mini
QH = Quarter Horse

Most are fairly self explanatory.

AG.QH1.00 would be an unpaired horse. I think that is all I do for organization, other than most divisions being organized by stats lowest to highest or by age youngest to oldest.
