interest in conformation QHs?

#75974 Posted on 2016-11-17 12:55:03

Thanks to Wey and Silverwolves selling off a lot of their foundation stock, I've decided to get into quarter horses.

I'd really like to see how quickly I can get excellent conformation, so I'm planning on focusing on that (and color) over stats. I think a less time invested project will be a nice distraction from the "long game" of my 64 horse dressage arabian line :P

That said, will any other players be interested in the "dropouts" of my project? They'll all have good conformation and hopefully nice colors, but they will definitely have lower stats than most lined horses. I won't breed foals that will have less than 100 stats, so at the very least they'll be on par with stores in that regard.

I'd like to be able to sell the spare foals, but if there's no market for them I'll probably let them "fade away" in a division of their own.

I have a nasty habit of picking up breeds. Pretty confo QH would probably push me into QHs, and will be similar to my Paint herd setup (established lines/confo horses paired with my own foundations).

I can 95% guarantee it, in fact. Actually, I like the idea of a faster-paced fun herd. OH GOD I think I just convinced myself to do confo QHs. O.o

*shakes fist*

Oh boy........... I just might be interested, as I do work with QH's along with Paints, and Appaloosas on my {BAF's Paints} account. ♥

*When I have time that is!!! Over Christmas break hopefully.......

depends on the colors... then maybe, for my spare :)
I have lots of rare colors on there already, so it would be cool to work confo in later down the line.

Ducky: do it do it do it (chanting) If you get into it, I'd love to trade/buy/sell some horses down the line and maybe even partner up :)

I should be able to get my herd of 32 down to a single horse in as little as 12 weeks (though realistically it'll be more since I'm also going to breed for color). My recently started arabs won't even be of breeding age in 12 weeks, so I think that this will be a great way to keep me more involved in the game. There's so many colors in QHs that after my 3-base/3-modifer arabians they just seem so exciting!

FG, you totally should!
Hopefully I'll be able to get some excellent confo horses in not to terribly long, and they should have shorter pedigrees than most of the well-conformed lines currently. They can add good confo to existing lines even. I'm just excited thinking about the possibilities :D

Raptorfang: They'll probably be my favorite colors! so lots of cream, dun, and leaning away from bay-based colors. I also like overo, splash, and tobiano on the QHs, but sabino not so much. I do have a fair amount of sabino in my starting horses though, so it might continue down the line anyway :P

it's been 3 weeks and i've finally gotten the colors i wanted to pass onto the second generation!

three weeks compared to the five months i'd have to wait for a stat-based line is so exciting. i'm hoping i'll be able to continue the pretty colors, but i've also started a second line with confo as the sole focus for the first generation (no color) that i'm really hoping will be getting me some 'excellent' foals. all the foundies have at least 60 so i've got my fingers crossed.

i also bought a lot of customs from Forevermore so i've basically been sucked into quarter horses for the long run too D:
i plan on pairing them with the second gen foals from my confo-only line in the hopes of adding color and also FLAXEN.

yes you should get into flaxens! we need more members producing quality flaxen QHs.

you have me thinking I might add a confo. line of QHs at some point; it sounds like it would be a fun way to fill in the 18-20 week lag of stat breeding.

i'm not sure there will be a lot of them, but the foundies from forevermore are SO pretty that I'll probably end up using them to jump-start a side project or two.

And so far it's been super fun!

I know that I'm sacrificing stats for the short term, but i know that I'll end up with a nice bunch of clean and fairly short-lined horses that are on-par stat wise with stores (and perhaps with better non-speciality stats, since I am treating them correctly from 0-3 before i start breeding).

I plan on holding off on immediately breeding the first generation that I acheive mostly "excellents" with in order to work on stats for a bit. Still - it won't take nearly as much time as my other stat focused lines!

That's enough of an incentive for me to keep going with it, and I'm hoping a few extra generations won't deter buyers, especially when they'll have great conformation :P

Oh I like this idea. Maybe I should do this with a different breed. Like maybe breed my AT mare to a stallion that perfects her conformation.

@ kahzie if you ever want to swap flaxen foals to diversify both of our lines (or are in need of a breading), let me know. I have a lot of flaxen stock available.
