I need a refresher for this....I have my Welsh horses that are 20 years old (finally) so I can hopefully get out of the breed. I'm very curious to know how the gestation plays into this. Should I breed them now at 20 yrs and whatever days to gestate through before they turn 21, or if I wait like the day before they turn 21 and retire does that affect the foal(s)?

I don't know the answer but It changed the way I do things..Not being able to see the foal instantly and then your horses aging out is not fun. :(

I think it was said the mare could be bred the last day she was 20, and then wait until the foal is born. The old mare wouldn´t die until the foal was born. Please let me know if I am wrong.

I've already bred some of my older mares just in case but I'd love to know.

Horses will not die until the age of 22+ so if you have a pregnant horse at 21, it shouldn't affect the foal :)
