trouble with shading.

#69614 Posted on 2016-09-25 16:48:28

I struggle with shading on gimp. I'll give one of my art peices as an example. I've tried watching tutorials on youtube. Any advice or youtube video suggestions would be great. If you have any other suggestions on how to improve my work it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no help when it comes to full highlighting and shading/greyscale type stuff, but I am pretty good at "flat" shading? if that's something you're interested in getting help with I'd be happy to make a tutorial.

That would be amazing. It's the type of shading I want to learn anyways. I'm not huge on grey scales, I have tried them before, but color was always off. I want to invent some characters, so being able to shade is a big part of that.

Awesome! I have to make an owl real quick (lol) but once I'm done I'll get you a tutorial :)

Edit: http://sta.sh/2phttdyk096
There are descriptions under each image (you'll have to click on the image)

Let me know if there's anything not explained in there that you'd like to know, I accidentally cut a few steps out, but basically everything is there.

Thank you very much. Your tutorial was quite a bit different than all of the ones I've read online where I open another layer and color it purple and so forth, using a tiny brush for blending.

Yeah lol, I don't really mess with all that crazy layer stuff as I find my method pretty easy to do.

I really like the way wey does her shading ^^

I tend to use my dodge and burn tools way too much xD
I have a lot of heavy shading and I tend to like that dramatic look.
Usually, I follow the same idea for placement as wey does, but again, just using different tools ^^

Honestly, I don't like all the tutorials on shading that youtube or dA has for the most part. They're really confusing. I taught myself by taking tid bits from various tutorials and stuck them together to get my method.
Ex am ples

I say try different ways and see what looks good to you :D
