Understanding Genetics

#48822 Posted on 2016-06-22 20:28:17

So I have been trying to figure out how to breed out certain colors, and just have a quick question for you all. This is my first horse SIM that has genetics so it takes some time to get used to it.

I have been interested in trying to breed a Chestnut Clydesdale, so from my limited understand would I be able to possibly get this color from this pair?

***Gahhh links are gone, edited for that***

this mare

and

this guy

or should I use this mare (But wouldn't Ea block out red?)

The first pairig its only a 25% chance you will get chestnut

What you want in terms of genetics for a chestnut is "ee"; the "A/a" genes don't matter. (They only affect a black base coat, to determine whether or not it will be bay.)

Myst is correct, both pairs have a 25% chance of creating a chestnut.

All three horses have "Ee" genes, so each parent has the potential to pass down either the "E" or the "e" to its offspring. You have a 25% chance of "ee", or chestnut; a 25% chance for EE, black with no potential for chestnut offspring; and 50% Ee, also black, but that horse could in turn pass down the "e" to an offspring.

First pairing:
25% chance of chestnut sabino
18.75% chance of black sabino
56.25% chance of bay sabino

Second pairing:
25% chance of solid chestnut
37.5% chance of solid black
37.5% chance of solid bay

In horse genetics, the E stands for extension. This is what determines if a horse will have black hair, "extending" the black pigment from the skin into the hair. The ability to have black hair, E, is dominant, and the inability (and therefore defaulting to red) is e, and is recessive. So any horse with E will be able to have black hair (EE, Ee) but an ee horse will be unable to have black hair.

A is agouti, and agouti is what determines where the hair will be black. If a horse is ee, it will not grow black hair, no matter what the agouti is. You will simply get a red (chestnut-based) horse.

There are four possibilities for agouti, and I will list them from most dominant to least dominant - Wild Bay (A+), Bay (A), Seal Brown (At), and Black (a). The more dominant option will always cancel out the less dominant (A+At will be Wild Bay, Aa will be bay, etc.)

To get a chestnut foal, you must breed two horses who both have at least one e in extension. The agouti does not matter. Two chestnut horses (ee) will always breed chestnut, Ee and ee will be 50% chestnut, and Ee paired with Ee will be 25% chestnut. An EE horse will never produce a chestnut foal.
