How many foals is too many?

#4420 Posted on 2016-02-17 16:41:22

I'm not too overly controlling over my stallions. Like Galactic, I go by semi-real life rules when it comes to breeding them. I set my stud fees high, and I do check the mares beforehand to make sure they are at least half of the stallions stats to keep the quality of their foals high.

Mares, I usually don't breed anymore than 5 times.

I usually set my stallions up for Private Stud when they turn 12.

Mostly I try to go by semi-realistic rules as well, though I think I won't need to be as strict with this with the new "No Inbreeding" mechanism. I got out of Mustangs on my Cspr account just because it was nearly impossible to find horses that weren't related to each other to start off with. I tried with store bought horses and slowly crossing in, but the problem kept cropping up--so I dropped them. Too frustrating. So when it comes to my horses, I try not to breed too many foals just to insure I don't get a whole herd of cousins or whatnot and have to sell half and buy new blood in one fell swoop.

Also, I won't mention the other game's name, but I have a Thoroughbred stallion named Lorenzo and the amount of foals he's sired is beginning to get absurd. I feel like he's going to be semi-famous or something. Don't know if I should raise the price of studding or something. Never really had that happen here.

1-3 depending on if I used twin potions or bred one to sell. Typically...1 =)

i personally look at it via realistic points. a stallion that is a higher earner in moneys and is a well known stud can sire hundreds of foals. (Look at Secretariat, what was he at, around 600?) so my stallions im usually just like EH whatever.
now the mares.... I'd say maybe 12 max if you wanna get crazy. (realistically this can be done but most don't go for that many, its a lot of strain on the mare herself)

on games, i dont think i'd care so much but with the mares i do, i wont buy if she has more than 10 maximum, because i'd probably be buying to breed at least two foals more so...

I love that you used Secretariat as an example Kylo. I was thinking to myself "I wonder how many American Pharoah foals we'll have running around in years to come..."

Same concept to me. If the stallion is worth breeding to, it doesn't matter to me how many foals he has sired.

Plus the equation for foal stats and conformation is unknown. Maybe a stallion was really good in shows but we can see that his foals are not that good.
Thats what im going to be looking for in a stallion has well, see if its relevant the information we can get about him from his foals (without disregarding the dam has well)

In the past, I've had strict rules on my breeding pairs. Generally, I don't breed more than once or twice per pair. Sometimes more depending on if I *need* to breed another baby so I can have a new pair.

I was starting with a second gen foal and pairing with a store horse, but since the whole conformation thing came up, I'm going to be rethinking that and changing my program as needed. Hey, who knows? I might get crazy and do four foals per pair! LOL
