Anyone else laid off of work still?

#234154 Posted on 2021-01-29 08:20:27

A wild Siren appears!
Yep, doing my occasional appearance here today lolol
But yea, I've been laid off of my work since last March bahah. I'm back to working 2 days, 5 hour shifts, but I'm still receiving EI because I can't live off of 20hour work cheques lol
I'll admit, it has been a nice vacation still lol probably cos I'm a lazy fart. But working 2 days is also nice cos it still keeps me busy, plus I just got a raise this month so the extra income is nice c:
The only reason I haven't been back full time is because we rely a lot on tourism in North America, so once that's back in full, I'll be back full time.
Anyone else still laid off because of covid?

Not fully but definitely hours have been cut and it's more competitive and difficult to keep the jobs period but especially the ones with lots of hours. Sorry to hear you have had difficulties but glad it hasn't completely ruined everything.

Oh yea I can see that happening. Sorry to hear!

But it hasn't been so bad. Canada had the CERB thing going on so the government was paying us if we were eligible for it. Now that I'm on just normal EI, I don't receive as much as I got from CERB, but I'm just very thankful I have savings

Having savings is important and I think more people will after this is over since they will have seen how helpful it is.

I've been working from home all through so mixed feelings about furlough - would have been nice to have an extended paid holiday in the summer but I know that really it's very worrying.
My mum gave up work completely and freelances now, my brother works in a clothes shop and has no idea when he will be back.
Best mate has just lost his job too :(

My cousin lost her job last May and now she has a job online from home.

She does that and then she takes care of her two kids, she has to make sure that they are doing their online classes, walking the dog(he is a Yorkie, forgot name), and making 3 meals and snacks a day. She loses her mind from time to time.

Thankfully both my husband and myself work in essential professions so we have not lost any work.

I did switch from a full time awake 3rd shift position to a full time 3rd shift sleep position so that I can function during the day to help the kids with virtual school. I lose my mind on a regular basis but this has gotten better since we moved to a house with a fenced in back yard so I'm not having to walk dogs on kids' recess and lunch breaks.

I feel for all those that are suffering financially or any other way because of everything going on in our world. It's a real shame.

Yea I can only imagine how hectic life is having to look after kids, pets and still having to work during these times!

I've only been getting hit financially lately because my cat's cancer is back and I've been bringing him in for expensive appointments. His consult with the oncologist is on the 23rd so I am very much hoping they wont have to amputate his leg.
But work has slowly been picking up for me so I've been getting extra hours here and there so the extra money is nice for these expensive bills

I was lucky enough to be freelance prior to the pandemic so hours wise it didn't effect me. I work whenever but mostly in the spring when it approaches Tax year end as I'm a small/sole trader business accountant & also help those with their self assessment accounting. I only have a handful of clients that do their accounts monthly as they go through the year.

I didn't claim any furlough as me & my partner weren't eligible apparently! But we had savings so just dipped into those. My partners been back part time in his own firm (but working from home still) since last Oct which has kept things ticking along.

My dad however hasn't worked since Early last march when he was returned from Norway as they shut down their borders and is kept being promised they'll have a start date soon (supposed to,be back in Feb but still no official notice of this). He could only claim furlough for half of the pandemic so far. Again no clear reason why though he had savings too so dunno if that effects anything??!!

Either way I am acutely aware there are many worse off than us (& we count our meagre blessings) and hope there's a light at the end of this horrible tunnel soon.

Well I'm glad you were able to keep your job still!
Sorry to hear about your Dad though. I assume you're in Europe? Canada paid for us up to almost a year and now we just get employment insurance which still pays us, not a crazy amount but it helps
