{HELP!} My First Time Lines

#221080 Posted on 2020-04-17 09:09:01

I found an old sketch of mine and I decided to create lineart from it, but I'm having trouble. Here's what I have so far::

JUST THE LINES

LINES ON TOP OF THE SKETCH

I'm completely stuck. I've never liked the face on this drawing and I don't know how to do all the details and shading. Would someone be willing to help me finish this? I want to turn this into a tag. It'd be my first time ever that the art is my own. Please help?

I mean I could give it a shot but I'm not super good. I'd love a recolor of this as a tag.

The biggest thing that sticks out to me is the jaw line and round off the eye a little bit...

One issue I'm seeing is that the far ear is bigger than the near ear. Plus the bases of the two don't match up. The near ear is incredibly more narrow. (I find the far ear more realistic in shape and proportions)

You also have the top line of the forelock near-perfectly lining up with the line of the forehead.

One trick I use for detailing the face is to never fully connect the mouth. Draw the line and then make a small break between the mouth and the indent where the mouth is supposed to meet up and curve around. It's a slight stylization, but (to me) a full line makes the lower jaw seem flat.

For the eye, I think you have it a bit too far to the left. You've got the right shape but now you've gotta outline it.

And lastly, the nostril. What I do is draw an unclosed G or 6. Again, stylization going on here, but there is no hard line stopping the nose. It has a bit of a ramp to go from outside the nostril to inside.

I know I didn't give any actual visual help, but I hope that this helps never-the-less.

Thank you all for trying to help, but I'm honestly starting to think this was an epic mistake. I don't think I have the skills for this. I'm frustrated beyond words and it's just not going right. Thanks anyways, guys.

You do what you want but l wouldn't give up. l wanted to but l didn't. l just tried something smaller. So I encourage you maybe try doing smaller as practice. No pressure though if you don't want to. :)

I wouldn't give up because none of us who do art would be where we're at now if we gave up trying to fix things we started when we first started. It truly is all about trial and error. Looking at reference photos help too and you just keep messing with things until it looks right to you and you're happy with it.

The first trial never looks right - the trick is to keep trying :)

Thank you guys for the encouragement. I really really wanted to give up last night. Fortunately, instead of scrapping it, I saved my progress and stepped away for the night. So here's an update; I've tried reworking the ears. I think they look a little odd because I don't have any other details yet, but I think they look better than before (at least in my opinion). And I reworked the jawline like TMRanch suggested.
