I feel like a terrible person.

#218286 Posted on 2020-02-11 09:29:43

This fine lovely Tuesday morning started off fantastic for me, until someone messaged me on fb wanting to buy decals again from my shop. This person X we will say, I gave her a bulk discount the first time she bought like 12 and I sold them for like 2 dollars. The second time I did it she bought less and I still lost profit. So she wants 6 for 18 dollars. Vinyl is not cheap whatsoever it’s like $14.00 a roll and with the amount she wants it basically uses the whole roll. With the size and the pricing. I was nice the first couple times. Until today and she was to buy 6 for 18. I charge $4.00 for one decal so I’d be losing money. I can’t afford to give away it. Then she guilt trips me into being a bad business owner and how it’s so expensive and how she can just go buy herself a machine and make it herself. So this has all put me in a quite upsetting mood. So I guess to make things better tell me if you like hot coffee or like me and like iced coffee.

You are not a terrible person Daphne! (And $4.00 for a decal sounds more then fair to me.)

Business is business, not charity. :)
If she wants to make her own decals, let her. ...then she hopefully will appreciate the time, effort and money that goes in to making and creating things.

And about the hot vs iced coffee. I really don't like (hot) coffee, but iced sounds delicious! :P
I have not tried iced coffee, but when the summer comes around I'll have to give it a go.

Aww daph :( People are so dumb. Next time, if they say "I'll just go buy stuff and do it myself" tell them to go right ahead! A Cricut is not a cheap purchase, neither is vinyl. So they can go blow a few hundred bucks, or just spend the $25. $4 for a decal is a steal really, that's what I've always usually spent (and more occasionally) and its always felt like a good deal. If you need anyone to talk to to vent, you know where to find me!

To answer the last question, I like both. Typically hot in the morning, and iced later in the day, but it all depends on the weather xD

Daphne...you are a business, not a charity. Only you can decide what your time and supplies are worth. I craft a lot and you must always factor in some value for your time, as most crafting takes a great deal. Decals may not but it's still a consideration.
You need to establish a set price for size and materials. If you want to offer discounts for bulk purchases you can, but it's not mandatory. You tried to be nice, but sadly all too often you will just get taken advantage of. With the price of vinyl, it sounds to me like any discounts will deprive you of a profit...so unless you are selling a zillion and business is booming, I wouldn't do it just yet. If you ask a fair price and do good work customers will be back. If you get a good customer base, you can throw in a sale or two during the holidays.
I would very nicely tell this customer that yes, she is right...as many decals as she wants it would probably be in her best interest to buy herself a machine. That should do it...nicely.

Coffee, you ask??? LOL Yes please...hot is nice when I'm cold, but mostly always love it iced!!

Remember...value yourself!!

Don't feel bad for trying to make money, especially if what the person is asking for/demanding is less then what is cost you to make to begin with!

And I don't like coffee at all XD

Ahhhh thank you everyone. It’s just really upset me this morning when she was wanting all of them for basically nothing. I’m gonna work on some stuff for me tonight when I get home from my school. It’s stuff like that, that just is disheartening because I put my time, effort and material into making the items. She starts saying she can just go buy the machine herself to make them better than I can. Thank you all for letting me vent to you guys. But it’s still got me in a saddened mood, I’ll be back on later possibly. Thank you all again for offering advice and listening to me rant.

I'm sorry, but if it's so much cheaper to do it herself then she should. You're trying to run a business, you have to charge what you charge so you can keep your business. If this person wants quality decals then she's just going to have to suck it up and pay the price to get said decals.

You're not terrible, you're simply trying to run a business and unfortunately, you're gonna run into people like this. If they don't like your prices then they can go elsewhere.
