Greys

#179594 Posted on 2018-07-19 14:36:35

So I have always wondered about greys and what other breeders think of them.

So I have a few questions for you all (please answer honestly)

1 - Do you breed for grey?
2 - Do you like grey?
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg?
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene?

Feel free to add more info.

I am asking these questions because I happen to have grey in some of my lines and I am wondering if it is making my horses harder to sell or they don't seem as breed worthy.

1 - Do you breed for grey? - no, infact i usually give color randomizers to horses i have who end up with the grey gene to get rid of it
2 - Do you like grey? - i don’t mind it, but i really prefer not to have it. it’s not the end all be all deal breaker for me, but if i’m looking to buy or breed to a horse and find two that are almost exactly the same and one just has grey, i’ll choose the other.

3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? - no, but like i said if i found something else without grey i’d go for that first
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? - Gg for sure
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? - it depends. if the gene were Gg i wouldn’t really care, but if the gene were GG i probably would be disappointed, i’ve ran into that problem a few times.

1 - Do you breed for grey? Certain horses of mine are specifically "Grey lines" so yes.
2 - Do you like grey? I love greys. I like watching them grey out over 16 weeks hence the deliberate grey lines!
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?  Not at all. Colour is the LAST thing I look for in a horse.
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg Either is fine - if its a GG it joins my Grey lines if its Gg I may just decide to breed the grey out of that individuals offspring.
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? Lol this has happened on occasion on my spare but I just say "thats typical of EV!" & move on. However on this my main acct I dont have many breeds with fancy colours in the first place to worry about such things except my cream Trakes but then I only breed they to fellow true creamies so I havent had this problem with them.

As a lover of greys Im not sure Im the best person to answer these questions!!

1 - Do you breed for grey? No
2 - Do you like grey? On some breeds
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? It would depend on the breed and overall quality of the horse. I won't pass up a good horses because of color
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? Gg. It would be easier to breed out if I wanted to do so.
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? I would be if I was specifically looking for something else.

Do you breed for grey? - for certain breeds I breed for gray, mostly on horses that have few colorations in the breed

Do you like grey? - I equally adore all colors on the game, but I do enjoy the 'flashier' colors so to speak

Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? - it depends on what i'm looking for, if I were buying it and/or breeding for a specific color I would go for a horse without the gray gene, but if I were just breeding for confo or stats I could care less of the color of the horse

If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? - in my lines that I breed specifically for gray, I would prefer them to be GG, but on other breeds it wouldn't phase me

Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse, but then find out they have the Grey gene? - no, I could still enjoy the pretty color until its covered by the gray and there would be a chance that the offspring could be bred to show the color in its offspring

1 - Do you breed for grey? Depends! I don't really breed for colors strictly so sometime I do ends up with more gray foals and that doesn't bother me.
2 - Do you like grey? Yes!
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? No. I think it is stupid to avoid a perfectly good horse just because it is gray. If I don't want to have grays in my lines, I will just breed it out instead of avoiding!
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? Doesn't bother me.
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? Nah. More challenges for me :D I will just make a new goal and try breed it out for next generation.

1 - Do you breed for grey? No. If it's in any of my lines, I try to breed it out. Anymore, I will use randomizers or grey-away tweaks to get rid of it from foundations, so that I don't have to breed it out of new lines.

2 - Do you like grey? Not really. Some of the earlier stages look nice, and I think the gradual greying mechanic in the game is neat! However, I don't care for the plain near-white stage it eventually reaches, and I don't like that it covers up all other colors or markings. While stats are always my primary focus, I also try to get a variety of colors and patterns, so I actively try to avoid grey (and white, for the same reason.)

3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? Avoid, yes, but it's not an *absolute* dealbreaker. If a horse was perfect for my goals in every other way, I would be fine with buying or breeding to it and hoping to breed the grey out in a generation or two. (Especially if it's carrying other hard-to-find genes.) But if it came down to deciding between a few otherwise identical options for sale/stud, I'd almost certainly choose a non-grey over a grey. Or if I was already on the fence about a horse and then I discovered it had a grey gene, it might be what decides me against it.
I will say that it's relatively rare for me to look for outside stock anyway, so I'm very picky when I do. Back when I more frequently bought or bred from other players, it was less of a consideration for me.

4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? Gg, as it means I can potentially get rid of the grey in a single generation, where a GG will be around for a minimum of two generations. (Almost an entire year in real time!)

5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? Very. If I want a flashy colored horse, I find it very sad to watch it fade to (in my opinion, boring) plain light grey.

So while grey isn't 100% a dealbreaker for me and my goals, I definitely don't find it desirable. But if the horse is otherwise of a very high quality, I'll overlook it and plan to get rid of it down the line.

Do you breed for grey? - Not specifically, no.

Do you like grey? - On some breeds, yes.

Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? - I would avoid breeding to a horse if it was grey, especially if it was GG. Sold horse, eh. Maybe. Depends on the rest of the horse. Stats confo blahbity blah.

If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? - Eh, Gg I guess. To be truthful I've never owned a GG horse [I think].

Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or

Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? - It would be a huge bummer. That has happened to me a few times and each time I was super mad at myself.

1 - Do you breed for grey? No
2 - Do you like grey? It doesn’t look bad on Arabs, but either then that no.
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? It would depend. If everything else was what I wanted and it had good genes either then gray I’d buy/breed.
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? Gg.
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? Yes I would, I’ve had it happen before.

1. Do you breed for grey?
Not for, not against.

2. Do you like grey?
On some breeds and colors/patterns, I love it.

3. Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?
No.

4. If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg?
I'd go for Gg but GG isn't a big thing.

5. Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene?
It depends on the individual horse honestly, but it'll still pass the genes on and it's not like you can't breed out the grey if you wanted to do so. So I wouldn't be -that- bummed.

1. Do you breed for grey?
I don't breed for grey but I don't not breed it either.

2. Do you like grey?
I like it on all breeds.

3. Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?
Nope.

4. If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg?
Usually Gg but I don't mind if a horse turns out GG either.

5. Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene?
Not particularly, I don't really prioritise colours. If I'm breeding outside of my lines I try to pick a non-grey stud if I already have a /pedigree since I usually sell the outside foal if it's bred at 19 years. If grey is the best stud stat/pedigree wise then I'll use a grey horse for a last breeding regardless.

1 - Do you breed for grey?
No but I don't mind if horse is gray. I have multiple gray (and also white) horses which have other benefits than visible color (carrying other valuable alleles or have low non-spec stats).
Since I don't want to spread gray (and white) on all of my horses, I plan to breed grays with grays (and whites with whites since there's no possibility to get lethal WW in game) but I want to keep gray in my herd
2 - Do you like grey?
Yes. On some breeds more, on some less but generally I do like it.
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?
No but I wouldn't breed GG horse to other gray horse (let's say that I find using DNA tweaks just to make Gg from GG as a little waste of money xd I use tweaks only on foundations or to give horse color that is possible to get from its parents) and it also depends on mare I want to breed. If she's gg I accept GG and Gg, if Gg then I more likely will use Gg stud.
It also depends on quality of the stallion - I would more likely use Gg stud than GG if they're similar quality but if the GG stud is way much better than gg or Gg, then GG.
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg?
I prefer Gg's - more fun to breed (they can surprise you more than GG's :>)
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene?
No. They still carry valuable alleles that can be passed on their offspring.
Although if the color is really what I'm looking for, I would use DNA tweak to make horse gg.

1 - Do you breed for grey?
I don't breed for grey, but I do have a line where gray is common and I don't mind it. Some colours in the game look good or even much better with grey.
2 - Do you like grey?
In real life and art, in the game I often just let it be.
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey?
No
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg?
Gg, there are just a few genes in the game I like homozygous.
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene?
Not really, I have some Freeze Greys stored for this situation. ;)
Wardrobe->Breed and gene set->Checking when to use Freeze Grey->Freezing the coolest looking combination of flashy genes and grey

1 - Do you breed for grey? Yes, I currently have a small herd of show jumping paints that are ALL grey... I also like a bit of grey in my Morgans
2 - Do you like grey? Dont mind it
3 - Would you avoid buying/breeding to a horse because it is grey? No, but I look more at stats, non spec stats than horse colour
4 - If you have grey horse would you prefer it to be GG or Gg? Doesnt matter..
5 - Would you be disappointed if you wanted to breed to a flashy coloured horse (Overo/Tobiano etc or Champagne/cream/flaxen etc) but then find out they have the Grey gene? Colourwise, no, ... would breed with a focus on stats/non spec stats first and foremost

** with freeze grey being available now, I found that you get some really pretty "shades of grey" in some horses now.. especially arabs and morgans
