So, about three hours ago, I was outside letting the horses out when I saw Cody Bear go after a lizard. I sped after him, but unfortunately he snatched the poor fella, before I could. When Cody has something, he ain't going to come or give it to you. So, after screaming my lungs out, I ran inside the house to trick my smart beagle, into coming inside. I recruited my mom to keep him inside, while I searched for the lizard. I had hoped it was okay, and if it wasn't that it had passed. I found him quickly, as I checked where Cody had last had him. To my genuine surprise, the poor little thing was alive, and in dire need of help as ants were closing in. I scooped him up, and put him in an open tupperware tray, with a paper towel as flooring. Quickly rushing him to my mom, who put Cody back outside, and then got busy cleaning him up. He's a lovely juvenile Five Lined/Blue Tail Skink. Unsure of gender as it's really impossible to tell at this stage. I just say 'he' as a default. With careful examination after looking up more about reptile injuries; his injuries are minor. He was just in shock, and needed a nice cool down, in an ant-free environment. Thus I set up my critter keeper, just as a storm started. Here we are now, and he's very curious, and active. He's gearing to go, so when my dad gets home, we'll be releasing him in a spot on our property away from the animals, and busy areas. I initially started this post, as a name contest, but I ended up coming up with a name as I thought more about him. Thus, Cinco, the Spanish word for five, came to mind. And no name could beat it. Here's a photo of him. Picture doesn't show his stunning blue tail, but you can google the Five Lined Blue Tailed Skink, and many show the tail in it's full glory. Plus anyone in the Southern US, has probably seen a few of these running around. Though, you can see his wounds, which will most likely scar; but there was no swelling, and they weren't deep at all. I saw no signs of anything internally either. He seemed active, and alert, once he'd gotten over the shock, and stress of the ordeal.
Update: I started this post around 7:35 PM, and now it's 10:30 PM. I have released him, and at first he didn't want to leave my hands. I ended up having to gently nudge him off, into the grass. He got a feel for it, and after we'd left for a bit, he scurried off. As when I went to check on him, he was gone. Though, since he's on the property, I expect to see him, here and there. We've loads of Skinks here, since we live in the woods. Two full grown ones live in our basement, funny enough. It's an above ground, and they can come and go as they please. When I first found him alive, and not dying, I was concerned I'd have to keep him until we could take him to a wildlife rehab center. But, after non stop research for several hours, and keeping a close watch on him, I was so happy to find out once his shock wore off he should be totally fine.
