I use Paint Shop Pro x8. Photoshop brushes can be converted for it using this program. I think PSP is $50 or $60, I forget, and there's a 30 day free trial for it on Corel's website.

There are loads of free brushes on DA. I only download the ones that are free to use for both personal and commercial use, and free to use without crediting the artist, so that I don't have to worry about remembering what requires what.

I only upgraded to x8 because my x4 gave me errors galore with Windows 10, heh.

I made a couple of dapple brushes, click to see the pack. These brushes are for GIMP, but I think they would also work for other programs.

I also use a couple of others, but I can't find a good link quickly x]

thankyou Jytte!

Merridel, I know he feels. I STARTED in paintshop pro 6 WAY WAY before the x series...doing photo manips for rp characters and horseland.com.

I had been using PSP 9 for awhhile, then my computer had trouble, lost it, (oddly, same thing for x6). I miss PSP :( it was really good for doing certain things.

If you're still looking for dapple brushes..
Link here
I made one quite some time ago for Gimp (will probably work for other programs though) and still use it to this day ^^

Examples:

Just airbrush a lighter color on the the areas you want dappling on (Shoulder, flank etc)

Heh, the last charrie I made had dapples, but I hand drew them all (cause im crazy like that) :3

I did the dapples in a darker color and just slowly erased them in certain areas with a soft brush of about 20px in size with a lower opacity of like 20%, then added lighter dapples as well.

Maybe I just like to do things complicated..lol

MY DAPPLES EXAMPLE

@Notori - Don't worry, I like to do things the complicated way. Plus sometimes I don't want the dapples to be too uniform.

But those look like great brushes listed above!

Any time I need to do dapples on something I hand draw them in. I've yet to find a dapple brush that I feel like gives the look that I want. Most of the time brushes look far too uniform to me.

The photoshop brushes with the abr format can be used in gimp I am pretty sure. They work in my version anyway. :)

i usually draw them by hand because im weird like that too

the trick is dapples are really just light areas with dark around them. I make another layer on top of the base color, set it to clipping mode or whatever makes it "adhere" to the layer beneath it (my SAI is in japanese so idk the english word), and then set it to overlay mode. Use light to make little uneven splotches, dont worry about them blending just yet. make weird splotches, then go around them with a darker color to create a "net" idk how else to explain it. Then lower the opacity to something crazy like 10% or whatever makes it look good and use a huge soft eraser with low opacity to make the dapples less prominent in areas to make it more natural. Usually dapples stick to certain areas and arent uniform all over the body.
