HP vs Dell laptops?

#172813 Posted on 2018-06-04 10:24:15

I've been looking at computers for a few weeks now trying to decide on what I'm wanting to get. I know I don't want a Mac and have been looking at both HP and dells, does anyone have any experience in these? I'm looking for one with a good amount of GB to it, I also don't have a price range :)

I have no recommendations as far as models simply because I just look at specs? regardless of model number.

But I personally like dell. They're good and reliable.
They make fantastic feeling keyboards I think lol.
HP's reliable too, my mom has always had good experiences with her HP's so It's all in personal preferences?
Sometimes toshiba's the way to go. :)

I've also used ( and am currently typing this with) a mac. Good call on going PC lol.

Ask yourself these questions:
Are you looking for GB in hard drive space or in ram?
How much of both are you looking for in a laptop? ( Keep in mind that you can always upgrade hard drive space.)
How well will it run your programs? (You'll be looking at processor power/speed etc. here)

Try browsing your local pawnshops for computers. You can usually find decent/good computers at a reasonable price. Always look at specs :3

I've never had a Dell but I've had good experiences with HPs - I have one I got in 2008 and it's still running (the only problem I encountered was needing a fan/heat sink replacement, which wasn't too bad). I'd recommend looking at ones with an Intel processor, cause those perform better than AMDs, and if you go for a computer that's more top of the line - rather than one that's more average - that will last longer for you.

a lot of my friends are computer nerds/gamers, they all swore on HP. They all said to avoid Mac and dell.

Lifetime Dell user here! I need to start looking into new computers but don't want to get rid of my the one I have now since I like it so much. (also I'm nervous about losing the CD/DVD drive, enough though you can hardly get anything that requires disk installation anymore). Mine has lasted me from 2010 to now. I got it right before heading to college and it's been a beast despite one sad virus breakdown in the middle of college (don't stream from the non-reputable places!) and last summer frying the motherboard connections a bit when it overheated. The model I have is known for having horrible fan placement, and with all the dust I'm around with it and the lack of air flow at the time it's easy to see why that would happen. It was a long fix only because of having a friend do it, but parts and labor was reasonable for both that and the Virus problem before. Regular dusting of the fans and a laptop prop to keep air flowing through the fans has been working just fine since xD The battery is the only thing I've been having issues with lately which just means I need to replace it or keep it plugged in.

Both of my siblings and my mother have gotten newer Dell options in the past two years and they're running great too (though Windows 10 was a change and a half). I've also used Dells at both the office jobs I have had both desktops and laptops, they're very widely supported in the business industry.

A few of my college friends have HPs though and it's quite comparable with dell apparently. My uncle used to work for Compaq before it was bought out by HP, and he was happy with them last I heard form him (we don't talk to him anymore mind, so that was some 4 years ago at least).

Thanks guys :D I'm leaning more towards an HP the more I look at laptops, I'm a bit hesitant to do pawnshops but I'll check it out anyway. I definitely want it to have a lot of space in the hard drive and at the same time have  one that won't take ages to load. I actually found one I might get but I'm still looking so I'm not set on it. It's the HP Silver Iridium 15.6 touch screen with Intel core and 12 GB,  1TB HD
