My weird Cat

#171478 Posted on 2018-05-23 07:59:59

Okay, this is going to sound weird to non-pet owners.

When I give my cat, Willow, a fresh bowl of food, she won't eat it until the food is in a odd shape. That's right, a odd shape.
When she eats, the food looks like mountain ranges or the Great Wall of china or any other odd shape. She also likes wake me up at 3 in the mourning, because she will also eat in the middle of the bowl down to the bottom and think the bowl is empty.
I get out of bed and swish the food around and she like, " oh, it's full". My other cat is not like this, I fill her bowl and she like, food is food and eat it normally.

I still love them to bits and can't imagine my life without them.

Haha, that’s hilarious!! I have 6 cats myself (they’re all barn cats though, but still very playful and sweet as they where born to my cat so I start handling them as soon the Mama lets me that way they’re used to me when they get bigger). One thing they like to do is when their  water is empty one of them will sit in the water bowl while I’m working in the barn and just stare at me in a disapproving way like “My water is emptyyyy, you doofus” XD

@Cherry Willows Ranch: Do you feed your cat pâté style wet food? You mind find that if you switch her to a chunkier food like Friskies shreds, or chunks in gravy she will stop this behavior (she may not, but it might be worth trying to get a full night of sleep).

My cat Sid does this same behaviour with pâté style wet food (it's almost like she is hesitant to stick her face into the food and likes to bite off the pointier bits of food), with a chunkier type of food she has more pointy bits to bite into (and she can pick up chunks with her paws and eat them outside of the bowl). If you do try to switch foods do it slowly adding in the new food to the old kind one day at a time; increasing the new food type (by ~a spoon full a day) and decreasing the old food type at the same rate, as cats are kinda known for their weak stomachs and picky eating habits.

Another thing you can try is feeding your cat from a plate/saucer rather than a bowl, many cats prefer plates because their whiskers don't touch the edges of the container as they eat (and your cat will not be able to eat just from the center forcing food into the edges of the bowl that need to be stirred again for easy access). You can also buy special cat food dishes that are very shallow but also have a slight edge on them so the cat can't push the food onto the floor (something they're prone to do if you feed from a plate).

And of course cats being the facetious animals that they are, none of those things might help.

Schrodinger’s Cat,

I feed my cat, Willow, dry food, because her original owner never fed her wet food. I tried to feed her every type of wet food and she sticks her nose up at it.
My other cat, Mimi, eats wet and dry food. But she only likes Fancy Feast, beef and chicken, wet food. All other flavors will not be accepted.

since you are feeding dry food I would suggest trying a shallow cat bowl with sloped side walls, this will help the food fall back to the center as your cat eats the peaks so maybe you won't need to stir the food again later. she might also prefer it if the reason she avoids the food in the edges of the bowl is because her whiskers are touching the bowl when she tries to eat them. (she may keep asking you to stir the food though since it means she gets a little time with you in the middle of the night and she might enjoy that ;)

amazon link to a whisker relief bowl so you can see what I mean by sloped walls (I think there are cheaper options with the same general shape)

my cat is very open to all cat food, except chicken flavors. she will eat tuna, whitefish, beef, turkey, etc... but if it has chicken flavor (even chicken w/ tuna, tuna is her favorite flavor) she will just lick the food and move onto to her dry kibble for the day since she knows tomorrow she'll get a non-chicken flavored wet food option. I now only buy a few cans of chicken flavored food a month, since I keep trying different options to try and find one she likes.
