What are characters

I noticed people selling “characters”. Just curious what exactly they are?
Or are they just decoration for the home page?

So basically they’re like horse or anything really art. I’ll use some of my babes for examples:

Precious is based off of one of my RL horses.  Deluxe members can create or buy tags with them or anything like that really. Hopefully this is actually somewhat helpful, lol. :)

These characters are frequently used as the subjects for "Your Horse Here" style art sold on site, most frequently tags and signatures. Characters are often given a backstory, personality profile, etc to make them feel more lively, and some users even use them in roleplaying."
