What are rare coats?

#164697 Posted on 2018-04-03 13:12:04

Hi! I joined about 2 weeks ago ( Or so, I dont really remember. How time flies *sigh*) and im starting to collect Gypsy vanners and Quarter horses. I cannot breed yet since im on level 3  but I would like to start collecting some rare coat mares for breeding. What are rare coat types/markings (If markings can be rare) For the Gypsy vanner and Quarter horse breeds?

Thanks !

Most markings aren't rare, but there are some which are highly desirable.

Desirable colors for both breeds are:
Brown Bases (At, so horses called Brown, Sable, or Moreno)
Cream (Cr, so Palomino, Smoky Black, Buckskin, Seal Brown Cream, Smoky Cream, Cremello, Perlino, Moreno)
Champagne (Ch, the world champagne is normally in the color name)
Dun (D, the word dun is normally in the color name)
Flaxen (f, only shows up if ff and if the base coat is chestnut; very desirable addition)
Silver (Z, only shows up on bases with the extension gene (E); very desirable addition)
Bays are the least desirable color, followed by Chestnuts with agouti (A)

Desirable markings for both breeds are:
Tobiano (T)
Roan (Rn)
Splash (Sp)
Overo (O)
Rabicano (Rb)
Sabino (Sb, personally not a huge fan of this)
Many people are also a fan of solid (have no markings) Gypsy Vanners.

Found in Gypsy Vanners, but not QHs:
Pangere (P, adds mealy to the horse color)

aglet pretty much wrapped it up, but I think that dunalino is also a rare color for both of them. BTW I am trying to thin my gypsy vanner herd and by thin it, I mean get rid of all of them. Go ahead and have a look at them and message me if you want any. (I have some nice colors)

yep dunalino's are palominos with dun, so they are pretty desirable (forgot about some of the strange color names)

Grullo = black dun
Dunskin = buckskin with dun
Dunalino = palomino with dun

i'll add more if they come to me

There’s a whole bunch of really nice Quarters and some good Gypsy Vanners in the Rescue Center if you’d want to check that out. It’s only $200 per horse, so they’re pretty cheap. :)
