I'm writing a book, and may pop here to get some answers to some weird questions I have when it comes to describing things. I will almost definitely be back with more.

First up:Β 
If I describe someone's eyes as mahogany brown, what do you think of?Β

I think of a deep rich brown with a hint of red or maybe purplish/red If that makes sense?

Not exactly what you asked for, but I'd drop the "brown" part and just go with describing them as "mahogany." It gives the same impression of rich, dark reddish-brown, but the beautiful sound of the word "mahogany" isn't interrupted by the harsher "brown."
