Interest Check - Driving Friesians??

#143266 Posted on 2018-01-26 08:40:36

I've been thinking about starting a new herd at some point in the future, but I wanted to have a herd of horses that there aren't necessarily a lot of on here (i.e, driving friesians, racing quarters horses, etc,). I would be focusing on confo and stats almost exclusively and I wouldn't really be breeding for any particular colours. Is there a demand for studs in something that I'm not aware of? Is there a demand for driving friesian studs? I would likely stud out many of whichever I go with.

I am considering converting my friesian herd to driving as well. Dressage are overly popular in general so I'm not interested in breeding dressage friesians so I'm strongly considering converting them to driving since I always had a weak spot for driving XD

I quite like driving as well! I know friesians are a somewhat light breed, but I found it odd that there’s only about 350 of them in driving and almost 2000 in dressage. Plus I kind of want to avoid adding any new breeds I get into dressage since the whole division seems over saturated. I notice that I have a lot harder of a time placing with my dressage Trakehners than I do with my show jumping Warmbloods, despite there not being much different in non-spec stats, treating, training, etc.

yup! I had same issues. Dressage is very popular so it is very competitive discipline. That's the main reason why I want to avoid western and dressage.

i’m a week away from starting my second generation of driving friesians.
i’m trying to breed chestnuts as well as horses with stars.

i’d love to have fellow breeders to swap foals with and to give me outside options to buy, brood, and/or stud :)

I will most likely train my friesians into dressage and then convert to Driving. Right now they are just babies though.

@Andromeda  Oh wow, I didn’t realize western was also super popular until you mentioned it! I’ll keep that in mind in the future when I think of adding other lines or getting new herds started.

@Kahzie  That’s good to know! I’m not sure how much I’ll be breeding for colour right away but I may eventually! Also I didn’t know friesians could have stars on here, I’ve never seen one (not that I remember, at least haha). I’ll keep that in mind when I start.

@Olympea  Oh wow, you have some good foundations there! Eros is especially nice, chestnut and 62 conf? Dang, you lucked out!

oh yes, stars are the only marking they’re allowed to have. And since it’s rare, of course I want it :p

my second generation will be all black, but since they all have a chestnut parent, there’s a chance I’ll get more chestnuts in the third generation. By then I’ll be looking to buy some outside bred horses to keep the line going since I started small (just   4 pairs) :)

I just looked up a friesian onsite with a star, and while it’s subtle I think it’s a nice touch! And good to know for future reference! I don’t think I’ll be starting a herd up this week since I’m quite busy with school, but I was thinking of grabbing 6 horses from the EC to start, I don’t really know what kind of budget I want to set for myself just yet.

I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't really like the chestnut Fries XD I don't like how shiny it is, and so with my Disney line I was really hoping the two recent foals would be black (especially since I was calling them Minnie and Mickey xD) and both ended up Chestnuts XD but hey, Mickey's got a star and their stats are great, so I can't complain XD Now that their parent's generation has died they are my last Chestnut ones.

same! Chestnut do look too shiny DX That's the main reason why I am unsure about breeding for chestnuts. For now, I might will stick with black. If I ever changed my mind, I can easily introduce a fresh lines of chestnuts into my herd.

I’m definitely making a herd of driving friesians now haha. I have to agree on the chestnut thing, though, they are almost too shiny, but not too shiny to seem realistic but just too shiny to meet my preferences. I’ll always remember that one super shiny chestnut I competed against when I was younger, the horse always looked weirdly shiny compared to other chestnuts at the show. I feel like my focus is going to be conformation as a top priority, then stats, then colours/patterns after all of that.

are you guys interested in a club for driving friesians??
I'm looking for active club with stricter registry for my friesians. I also have plenty money to throw around XD so I'm willing to help funding a new club XD (I can't create new one since I am an owner for AMHA)
