Breeding Colours

#135335 Posted on 2017-12-20 03:29:43

Hi
I have a big general question regarding colouring from possible matches over several breeds which I hope newer & younger members will find useful.  I know the easiest way is to purchase the colours I want but half the fun is breeding and is not always 100% of what you expect to be foolproof.
e.g. Bay+Buckskin= Chestnut
Chestnut+ Cremello = Palomino
Black+Chestnut= Bay
Bay+Cremello= smoky cream or smoky black.
How do you get the following
Buckskin
Cremello
Dunalino
Grullo
Moreno
Perlino
Red dun
Seal Brown Cream
And the various champagnes as well as Sooty, Mealy & Flaxen

I would understand if you said use the trial & error method or work it out for yourself but I need the help of you more experienced breeders as I am trying to plan for some stunning  Christmas Day babies!

Finally, does using the foal colour indicator have any effect on what you might receive because when used got run of the mill colours and not used was surprised by a beautiful smoky!

This is what I use to get a general idea of the color possibilities when breeding
Coat Color Calculator

I've used the foal preview and gotten different colored babies; it doesn't have anything to do with the outcome of the foal :) Just a preview of what you may get.

There is also a calculator here, which uses EV genes only :)

not all of those examples that you have are correct. i'm in a rush to work but can elaborate later if you'd like!

i'd definitely suggest checking out the calculator that It's Snowing On Io recommended (since it's just the EV colors).

there is also an EV genetics guide created by (i think?) Vos, and it explains all the genes and the combinations. It's very helpful when you're just starting out. I'll see if I can find the link in a bit!
