Opinions on Grey/White

#130537 Posted on 2017-11-28 15:27:25

Hi All

I was wondering what peoples opinions are on the Greying or white gene?

do you just accept it, hate it, breed for it etc..

I personally love them especially the greys as I love watching the colour change!

I would like to know what everyone else thinks??

I like both, normally I hate anything to do with white but the horses look pretty when  white XD. As for the Grey's I think they're pretty decent looking. I don't breed horses much on here, but it's not like I'd just get rid of them if the horse turned out grey/white

I'm on the fence about both. I like certain stages of grey on certain coat colors, but I'm not a huge fan of how the markings disappear completely when the horse is fully grey.

As for white, I like the mystery factor of what color/markings are under the white but sometimes I get white horses that I wish weren't white because they're really pretty underneath.

Totally agree with Champagne here- some of my Trakes look great at certain stages of the greying and then they'll look odd.

It can be very disappointing to have a beautiful cream coat in my Tekes to grey out but if its a common coat color, I don't mind it. I actually like the way grey Tekes look. Very pretty when they are fully greyed out.

Personally, I love grey and white so I will not turn away a good horse just because of grey/white genes. However, I don't actively breeding for it because I know that I will never able to sell/stud/brood them.

i’m neutral about greying. it’s something that can be bred out and i like watching the progression.

white, on the other hand, covers up everything from the get-go, so i actively avoid white horses .

I like both, although I don't like graying if it's a rare color or a real pretty horse, but for the most part I like the way grays look and also like whites.

I think it's okay, but in my case I have a line of Lipizaners and ALL of them either have GG or Gg and are bay. :/
Not great in my case, but it makes sense as real horses of that breed grey out.

I don't care if a horse has grey or white as long as the color under it is a common black/chestnut/bay. If it has a modifier then I get a little bummed out that it's covered but still not a biggie most of the time.
My one exception though is for lines I'm trying to breed for color. I nix out grey and white completely because they cover up the colors and would make the project pointless.

I like both. None of them are over-represented in any of my main breeds, so I don’t mind a grey horse here nor a white horse there.

I was wondering if there were others who didn't mind grey/white or even liked it on here xD I thought it was nearly universally hated.

I seem to have a similar stance to most actually - grey/white is fine to me on common colors but really is a shame when it covers up lovely complex coats. I have a bunch of grey horses and I really do like watching the stages of it, and the all-white ones are pretty cool.

I do plan on breeding to control it though and keep it from covering any nice markings/colors and running rampant since it's dominant. I won't ever eliminate it from my lines though, it has its place. c:

I wont keep a horse that is even Gg. I breed my Quarter horses primarily for color, so I dislike them graying out on me and losing their color... I'm happy though, as I've very rarely gotten a QH with a grey gene at all. Not sure if it's just rare in the breed or if I've been lucky xD
I'm getting into Minis too, and although I'm going to primarily breed for stats and confo, I still care enough about the color to not want any grey gene in them. However, if I get a mini from the EC with GREAT confo, I'd think about looking over the Grey gene and keeping it anyways.

I used to breed Lipizzaners, but for some reason (despite the fact that Lips are supposed to turn grey) I couldn't get past the fact that 90% have the grey gene... Maybe someday when I need a new project I'll do them again, and my main project will be to get a herd with NO grey gene in them :)

I also don't like white horses, as they don't ever produce good colored foals, so I've noticed.

I wont keep a grey in my breed, rarely keep non-dilute or base colors.  I intend to breed for color such as dilutes or duns, I don't want the grey gene in my herd.

I don't mind the coloring, but for breeding purposes absolutely not.
