Horse Names

#13011 Posted on 2016-03-01 12:56:48

Now I know basically certain names are off limits (slurs and profanity), but there's a certain gray area I'm not sure of. For instance, there's the Gypsy Vanners. "Gypsy" is a recognized slur against Rromani and other nomadic peoples. That's not debatable btw. So naming horses with that should probably be off the table, but probably isn't. In the same way calling a horse "Psycho" or similar might slip by, as perhaps a movie reference, despite the fact it's often used negatively against the mentally ill. So I dunno. Maybe I'm too sensitive?

My question though is about one thing, one of the horses I bought awhile back. His name is HMF Whiskey on the Rocks. I now have two of his foals named Amber Whiskey and Vodka. So are alcohol names all right, since it's PG-13 around here? (I'm not sure if drug names would be acceptable however).

(This is personally, I have no idea if this is against the rules or not either)

Personally: They see the word whiskey on TV, on billboards, in the grocery store, on mom and dad's liquor cabinet. I wouldn't think twice about using it as a name here. Whiskey is also a color name, so it can be excusable using the same logic you use with Psycho.

Again, this is my personal opinion. Wait for a Mod

You're being a bit sensitive.

Just because something is used negatively, doesn't mean those that it's used against find it negative. Any word can be used negatively if used often enough and in the right context. I, quite honestly, don't know of many people with mental illnesses (myself included) that are going to care that a horse is named "Psycho". In a lot of cases, those that do complain are only just trying to stir up controversy. I.e the people who claim that the only people who should say they're depressed are those with depression.

I can't really say about alcohol or drug names. Illegal drugs? Yeah. I'm 90% certain that's a no-no. I don't know about legal, prescription drug names. Maybe not the brand name for copyright reasons, but I personally wouldn't see an issue with the generic name or even the chemical formula name.

Well, I am neurodivergent myself (DID/PTSD/SPD), so I am also a lot more sensitive to things than other people. I'm also really empathetic so I hate hurting people's feelings. IMO I think people saying "I'm so OCD" or "I'm so bipolar lol" is kinda rude, in the same way people saying "I'm a cripple now" when they temporarily broke their foot is sorta rude when I'm in my wheelchair a few feet away. I know they don't mean anything by it of course. No ill intention. Like today at the voting place, people called my family gypsies and I wasn't happy but didn't say anything. I mean, they meant it nicely, I guess. Like it was cool. (We're nomadic by circumstance, not by choice, but yeah.) So it definitely has to do with context. One time I knew somebody who was saying that "If we just locked up the mentally ill, we wouldn't have gun violence" and that was really bad though. Not on this site, another one.

Anyway, thanks for the quick response guys. :) I'll stick with just basic alcohol names for his descendants then, since it isn't a problem. Just didn't want to cause any trouble.
