*Ability to Tag Members

#114493 Posted on 2017-07-16 14:08:11

Having started to get a little bit more active on the forms again, I noticed that there is no way to tag members in a post.

On many forums and websites that use forums, when writing a post there is the ability to tag a member in that post. This is often done using @Membername or some other variations of that same format, and what it does is it sends a notification to that member. This lets the person tagged know they were mentioned in that specific post, and as such they can then go back to check it.

The reason I am suggesting this is that currently if someone responds to something you have written in the forums, there is no way for you to know that they have responded to you unless you then go back to the post, and if the posts has had a lot more replies from when you last checked it could be hard to see if anyone actually responded to what you have said. This can also be used when requesting someone's input on a certain thread, whether or not they actually posted in it.

Support. This is a very useful and often used feature in other forums I've used.

The only way I could realistically do this without forcing static usernames (e.g. unable to change your member name) is to ping user IDs.

I don't think either solution would be a problem. From what I have seen, most members don't change their usernames very often, however, if people don't want that to change pinging member IDs should work just as fine. The problem with IDs however is that it would be rather annoying to have to visit the members page in order to retrieve it. Now, I don't know if I am confusing equiverse with another site (which I most likely am), but I could have sworn at one point that the member IDs were displayed next to a players name when they made a post. If member IDs are used for the pinging feature, putting the ID next to the users name or maybe even below the stars would be extremely beneficial.

The member IDs were removed because it was too cluttered I believe.

I'd definitely like this feature, and for it to be used with user ID's as those are already static. As little as I've changed my username throughout the years, I do still enjoy the freedom of updating it with holidays or inside jokes between groups of people. Also the ability to change my spare account's name depending on what I'm using it for. I know other people get tired of the same old usernames after awhile too (nobody likes having to deal with a username they made as a kid when they get older haha)

I wouldn't at all mind the ID's being below usernames in the forums again, that's actually a feature that I was really bummed about when it was taken away as I found it very handy.
