Overbreeding?

#113709 Posted on 2017-07-11 11:50:29

I don't really care for the idea of "overbreeding". I personally will be breeding my horses 1-4 times max, but I'm not going to let the amount of foals a horse have lower its value in my eyes. If there is a stud I like, or a horse up for sale, I'll buy it regardless of the amount of offspring.
Inbreeding, is for sure, a bad thought, but it doesn't effect my horses at all.

Personally I don't really care about "overbreeding" But I'm a player who most breeds my own horses only once to keep away from possible inbreeding within the restricted generations. I offer up studs/broodmares and foals periodically if asked on my main lines, but other than that don't pay much attention to foals or breeding unless buying a horse to match one of mine, since you can't gender change horses that have been bred.

I have a section of studs and broodmares that at put up for stud/brood at 10 years old if they're over 500 stats(which I'm probably upping to 600+ now that stats ware easier to gain). They start at 8k and go up incrementally with each foal they have. A few only get one or two foals but a lot of people will breed to these horses multiple times(even with a price increase each time) to get foals they want and like. EV has a large enough population of horses and breeders that fear of inbreeding resulting from horses that are overbred is dissipating in most of the larger breeds. Overbred to some people used to be a strict 3-5, but I see people now being more lenient with saying 7-10 more often now.

As to cost discounts, I'd say it's different for sales vs studs. If you're selling a horse you might discount by 1-5k for each foal a horse has, whereas to me at least your cost should go up the more foals your horses has at stud, because it shows how your horse is liked and used for breeding to produce good foals. Raising costs may deter the people looking for a quick foal, or make them think twice about breeding with your horse unless it really is the best on the market, but making the price go down with a number of foals makes people more likely to continue breeding to the horse because the horse is getting better as it ages(we hope!).

I aim to breed my mares up to 3 times only ideally, i aim for higher stats and colors/pattern, if conformation is good that's definitely  a plus for me but not my main concern. I may breed to an outside stallion for purpose to up my lines stats or improve conformation that's on a very rare occasion. If i stud my future stallions, i will only offer them privately not public and will only offer them up to once a year horse ages(so stallion will cover a mare once a year) not sure if that makes sense but  in example: stallion is 3 years of age(covered 1 foal)once stallion turns 4 will cover another foals and so forth.
If you really think a  stallion covering once year in real life isn't really that bad is when they covering quite a few times a year that's questionable

I honestly don't care about overbreeding. I'll breed a horse as long as I can, but I'll breed in generations. I also don't really breed with outside studs.
