Perks of gelding?

#10273 Posted on 2016-02-26 07:18:30

I know this was a bit of a hot topic on the old EV, but is there any benefit to showing/having geldings on the revamp? It was discussed to death previously and I have no idea if a consensus was ever reached about possibly giving geldings a very small boost in shows to give them some value at least as show horses for people.

Just curious. I gelded several of my stallions with sub par confo here and just use them to show and rack up points, but I was interested to know if they had any small bonus in shows anyway.

I don't think they do. But I could be wrong

I remember it being discussed? I was going to ask the same thing because I was considering gelding some of my ponies. xD

The main benefit now is that it can't be reversed (so if you breed a horse and don't want it to be bred, then you an geld it and sell it to other people as a show horse). But I don't know if they get a bonus for shows...

I'd really like to know the answer to this too. I'd love for geldings to get a showing boost.

I do like that it's not reversible now!

But I do think, especially because it's not reversible, that it would be awesome if there was a small boost of some kind for showing. Whether it's like a higher "luck" factor or something or maybe they have a chance of gaining one or two extra stats when they place? Idk. Just throwing some ideas around. 😂

They don't get a bonus for shows.

Would that be a possible addition or is it not something you'd consider? I can go make a post on the suggestions board if it would be a possibility. 😅

I don't honestly see the point in a stats gain boost. They aren't breeding so it's rather a waste of stats, imo.

If there's any sort of random factor to showing, maybe they get less of one? I don't know if showing is still based on horses have more stats than the rest. I wanna say there were ideas about a bit of randomness being thrown into the shows, but I have no idea if that made it into the final product.

In either case, a few geldings around wouldn't hurt for money gain sine it wouldn't matter if they pulled in stats or not.

Onnnn the other hand. It'd suck hardcore to have an 18 year old gelding with higher stats than some of your breeding horses.

I was thinking of a show boost more like giving the horse tack (+ 10 for all stats) or something. So it isn't part of the "inheritable" stats anyway, but there for them to use.

It would be nice to have a competitive advantage for the geldings so that they don't get deleted, but have some use on the game. Like newbies might be able to buy really good geldings for cheaper than breeding horses and use them to compete with (and make money), but in the end are unable to breed them (as the breeder may not want those genes passed on). Right now breeders just delete horses with "unwanted" traits; this might give the horse economy another layer.

I definitely like that idea Aglet.

I've always struggled with the idea of keeping gelding around on games like this because generally, aside from the fact that nobody can breed the horse ever again, there's really no point to having them. It would be nice if there was some value added to gelding that would make it profitable to keep them around.

I agree with what has been said. Really no point in keeping them around right now. Is that a problem? I guess I don't really know.

But it would be cool if they helped gain even additional experience points which would give new players and advantage to having them.

Feel like a huge reason they're even in existence is if someone breeds a horse that they don't want bred again. Maybe it makes the horse hard to sell/generally unwanted, but. It's effective.

If you don't want it bred again, though...don't breed it. Why spend the money gelding?
If you don't want someone else to breed it...don't sell it...

It sort of goes round and round for me, so I don't understand the expense.

Well, particularly since you can't delete horses on this incarnation of the game, there's not a lot you can then do if you have a horse you no longer want, but don't want other players breeding. If you breed a pair of horses several times, say, in the hopes of getting a certain genetic combo, you could wind up with a few spare horses. Since they're all related, I can understand not wanting them all to be a part of your breeding program. But if you're somewhat protective of your lines, you wouldn't want to sell them, as you then have no control over them, and they could be overbred by other players.

It's certainly true that you could keep them and just let them die on your account, but that's a 21-22 week commitment, and five or so months is a long time to hang onto a horse you don't want. If someone else wants to hang onto them as a show horse, then that can at least be some benefit to someone else, while clearing out the space for you.
