What is conformation even for???

Now that I know that conformation doesn't effect show results, I'm wondering what the purpose of it is. Is it just another thing to breed for? I think there where conformation shows before the recode, so is conformation something that did have a purpose before the recode, but Abbey decided not to get rid of it?

I'm pretty new to this game, but I love the extra aspect of breeding genetics and conformation in this game. And even though it doesn't influence their showing, just like in real life, don't you just WANT a horse to have good conformation?
Guess I'm just a breeder by heart, always wanting to perfect things ;)
