The long road back...

#88184 Posted on 2017-01-19 11:30:48

It's been quite some time since Ive locked up. Months in fact. I locked up originally to catch up on commissions and such, but then, unfortunately my real life ended up taking a nose dive. Again.

So, long story short, I am in the process of rehabbing my finger, which had been paralyzed while I was away. How did THAT happen might you ask? Oh...just an open door, a quick cat, and a mean bougainvillea. Magnus - the trouble maker, saw an oppurtunity, and he took it. I ran after him through the backyard, and along the fence line back there, we have a bougainvillea, you know, large, thorny bushes with weird papery feeling flowers, usually purplish pink? Yeah...When I dived to grab him (Which was a success), the plant decided to fight back. One of the thorns tore deep into my finger around the first knuckle, ended up damaging some nerves, had to have 6 stitches. I'll spare you the gorey details on how it looked...but let's just say, it was enough to make me vegatarian for a few days. So, that had to heal for a few weeks. Maybe a month? I dont remember at this point, but in that time I wasn't able to use it what so ever, and now, I have to learn to work around it. But it's only the first knuckle up that's paralyzed, why would that be such an issue? I have no idea, but it does cause a lot of issues, more than you'd expect. I can't hold things the same way anymore, I had to relearn how to open a freaking bottle of water! I mean, seriously? C'mon life! Cut me some friggin' slack already! Needless to say, it's gotten in the way of my art, and that's been sinking me into deeper depressions due to ya know...not being able to draw like I used to, and that really disheartened me to the point of losing -all- motivation for my art. (I'm a cranky old man, what do you expect?)

So ontop of all of my previous (and still unfortunately relevant) health problems, Ive been dealing with this, and not to mention the holidays. Pulling and pushing me this way and that, Ive not had as much chance to sit down and really push myself to work on "adapting" my finger to work for arting.

TL:DR;

Finger's paralyzed. Im trying to come back. My art sucks eggs now because I more or less have to relearn how to art. :(

Glad to see you back but dang you have had a rough few months! I did something to one of my fingers on my right hand and I had to keep it splinter for a few weeks/monthish and it was such a pain typing at the time because the splint got in the way. I just woke up to it aching one day so my best guess is I hit it against the desk that's next to my bed while I was sleeping. Thankfully mine was fine after the time in the splint, so I can't fully imagine how you feel but I totally get the frustration of it getting in the way of everyday things.

Wiki, the splint was probably the worst part of dealing with it. It was so damn difficult to do anything independently with it on, and honestly, after 2 weeks of the non sense, I took the splint off >_> and just kept it fairly snuggly bandaged to keep from jostling everywhere.

Sorry you hit yours that bad, and man, I can only imagine how bad -that- hurt. Once all the initial pain and stuff from inflammation was gone, my finger become more or less numb, then went hyper sensitive, and is still abnormally sensitive, yet, I cant move it (wtf?)

Hi Buck! Glad your back, i dont know you very well but i remember your art which has always been excellent.

I was gone for awhile too, for like 9 months but only because of my human gremlins :)

Sorry to hear about your finger mishap. Although difficult, you seem like a strong person to overcome. We are not given more than we can handle. Its silly though how something so little can be such a huge pain in the you know what!!! I just had carpul tunnel surgery -yuck- and like you a stupid water bottle is an issue, or typing like now is ridiculous. I do hope you regain feeling in your finger! As i anxiously await any of your future artwork!!! And only wish happiness in anyones days :)

The nerves in the finger will also learn new paths to by pass the damaged ones but it take some time for the body to rewire itself. The more you try to do with it the more it will learn to do. I know how hard it is because I messed up some fingers on my left hand. The dr told me it would never be the same as it was but happy to report they are all back to full functioning. I am glad your doing better and you will figure out how to do your art again. Never say die, it's always a way to fight.Never give up.
