Rare coats in Appaloosas

#87350 Posted on 2017-01-13 13:20:36

Hi everyone again!

Thinking of beginning an Appaloosa line, what are the less common and rare coats?

Don't want to give up any horses with nice coats!

For example; is this a less common coat? http://equiverse.com/horse.php?id=560817

and this? http://equiverse.com/horse.php?id=560818

Bay and black are definitely not rare. They're the most common along with chestnut.

Those markings aren't rare either, but I'd say rabicano is probably a little more rare than varnish roan or few spot.

The most rare colors for Appaloosas are all of the Champagnes as far as I remember. Though I noticed those pop up once in awhile while creating them, whereas I never had them pop up when creating other breeds that can be those colors.

The brown bases are a little more rare too (like seal brown and brown dun).

Thanks, how many times does it take creating horses to find rarer coats on average or is it pure luck?

I can make around 100 horses in the EC to get about 16 that have either a good coat color, or confirmation that I like.

In Appys, at least what I like, is varnish roans and spotted blankets - I really like things that actually show off the horse color. I try to get horses that are Lplp or lplp, so I can eventually breed the appy markings out of them, or at least breed them into spotted blankets.

But markings like Tobiano, Splash, and Rabicano are good to have, along with Silver, Champagne, Creams, and Browns. I ended up using marking/color randomizers on my line of appys to get some of these in their genes, rather than all luck from the EC.

If you want you can take a look at my rescue horses on my spare and see if there is anything you like . There's no champange's or silvers, but there are a few interesting ones.

The silvers brown and champagnes are few and far between...but they do come up...in terms of coat patterns, besides the overo, tobiano, splash...an actual leopard doesnt come by that often..most are few spots....if you come across and Lplp Patn1Patn1, or Lplp Patn1patn....they dont come up that often
