How do you price your horses?

#86124 Posted on 2017-01-07 18:12:52

I was curious to know everyone's system of horse pricing since it varies so much. Do you have a definitive pricing system, or do you eyeball each horse and price it accordingly? Should I sell or auction my horses, what are the advantages/disadvantages? What do you look at when you buy a horse (stats, points, grade, conformation, colour, pedigree, markings, etc). Any response/help is greatly appreciated!

i very loosely use the

price = (75 times stats) + 5k for each dilution/modifier/pattern

formula.

for super rare things (homozygous brown or flaxen) i might jack it up a little more.
I also stud/brood for half that number.

i've never auctioned my horses using the game tool so i can't speak to that!

- When buying a horse i want as short a pedigree as possible - stores and second gens from uncommon lines are the best.
- I don't look at points or grade at all.
- I prefer good conformation in horses (preferably above 58 whenever possible, with no more than 1 poor scores but its not always a deal breaker.
- I want the stats to be as close to the chart on my page as possible (ex: 400 + by age 10 for stores)
- The colors i look for depends on the breed. for arabians i prefer horses without agouti and with flaxen. for mustangs i don't want horses without any modifers/dilutions (ie plain black, bay, chestnut), but i also dislike champagne.
- Markings is much the same as color - it varies by breed. I like all markings for arabians. For mustangs, I only like roan, splash, and rabicano.

i hope that helps! i sort of rambled toward the end :)

I do 100*stats +5k per dilute or marking + 10k flaxen, At or silver gene. I do studs at varying prices mostly depending on the stud market when I'm listing my stallions.

I ignore points, any conformation above 50 is cool, and stats need to be on par with age (100 + 35 stats per year for foundries, 350 + 40 stats per year for second gens).

I am a pedigree clean freak, any broken lines, deceased horses, or inbreeding is an imidiate no go for me (I will make exceptions on deceased horses if the seller can guarantee no inbreeding). By deceased horses I mean any place where the pedigree says deceased rather than having a link and not just dead horses lolz.

I also avoid lines with excessive breeding in them when I can; for me excessive breeding is more than 10 foals from a mare/stallion though I myself only breed a max of 4 foals from any given horse.

I normally do 10k per 100s, plus extra for rare genes, depending on what they might be in each breed (normally At, Z, f, Rb in quarters and paints). Stud fees are half of this number.

When buying I look for rare genes, confo (to a point, cause I can raise bad confo), and mainly pedigree. Inbreeding is a no-go, I can accept deceased horses in the pedigree depending on how far back they are, and short pedigrees are what I aim to buy.

I avoid any horses with excessive breeding and prefer lines that are only bred 3-4 times a generation. I make exceptions where necessary, as some horses have foals that have died and things like that.

Everyone has given solid info for pricing strategies and what they look for. I figured I'd address how how I sell horses. :)

How I sell a horse is dependent on a couple of factors:

1) If I am selling a horse that is of a popular breed with a highly-desirable gene or two (example: Flaxen Gypsy Vanner, homozygous for Pangere / PP) and good 2nd-gen stats, I will put it up for private auction on the horse's page. This allows me to have the auction go on for longer than 24 hours with a hard end-date, and allows me to "vet" the potential home (unlike the Auction House). It allows, I believe, a higher price to be reached for the horse, and the market decides.

2) If I am selling a horse whose lines it is important to me to preserve the rarity of, I will put up the horse for private auction on his/her page so I can vet potential homes. In this case I generally look for breeders who preferably breed no more than twice, although I find up to 4 as acceptable. If I'm encouraging bidding, I'll say so in the ad I post in the forums. I will also clarify if I'm merely vetting the homes, so competitive bidding isn't necessary.

3) If I am selling a foal from one of my "pet" projects, where preserving my lines isn't as important to me, I'll price similar to above and put the horse up for straight sale on their page OR put up in the Auction House with the reserve price as the lowest I'll accept.

4)Occasionally I'll play around with the Auction House. I haven't quite figured out how to best use it, although I have been successful with the handful of horses I've put in there.
