How to breed Palomino paints?

#83183 Posted on 2016-12-26 22:06:28

I've heard it's pretty tricky even if you have one palomino. How can I breed for at least 50% chance of palomino foals, what would I need to do to for sure get a palomino foal?

Pair a Chestnut and a CrCr horse together.
Chestnut with Crcr = Palomino.
Chestnut with CrCr = *Cremello?
*Not 100% sure on this

That way, you are guaranteed to get one cream gene to pass on. :)

Chestnut with a Crcr would be a palomino. Cremello is ee CrCr (double cream). Agouti can be aa/Aa/AA, but has to be 'ee'.

Pretty much, breed:

One: Horse 1: ee CrCr (perlino) x Horse 2: ee (chestnut) = ee aa Crcr (palomino) - most reliable method as you have a 100% chance.

Two: Horse 1: ee Crcr (palomino) x Horse 2: ee Crcr (palomino) = 25% chance ee CrCr (cremello) / 50% chance ee Crcr (palomino) / 25% chance ee crcr (chestnut)

Three: Horse 1: ee Crcr (palomino) x Horse 2: ee crcr (chestnut) = 75% chance chestnut / 25% chance palomino

This is where it begins to become a bit of chance to get a palomino. I'm only doing the Ee, as it determines black or bay, and you would have to go with the ideas of passing along a cream gene as shown above:

Four: Horse 1: Ee x Horse 2: Ee = 75% chance EE/Ee (black or bay, depending on agouti), 25% ee (chestnut)

so Ee CrCr x Ee crcr = 75% chance Buckskin / 25% chance Palomino
and Ee Crcr x Ee Crcr = 75% chance black/bay based (EE/Ee) / 6% chance ee crcr (chestnut) / 6% chance ee CrCr (cremello) / 13% chance ee Crcr (palomino)**

** percentages on this last part are slightly off, but not by much.

@Nitrous: Just wanted to correct the third one, tough I suspect it’s just a typo. :)

Since Cream is dominant, it’s 50% chance for palomino, not 25%.

The chestnut horse can only pass on non-cream (cr), which one doesn’t matter. It all depends on whether the palomino passes on a cream gene (Cr) or non-cream (cr) = 50% chance palomino (Crcr) and 50% chance chestnut (crcr).

Thanks :)

Update: I had bred the palomino stallion I bought to many of my mares using these suggestions and another I saw on some random forum (Can't remember which) and one has produced a palomino colt! (still have a few left to have foals in a few days) I got bred him to this bay mare :
Magnolia

And ended up with this gorgeous Splash Roan pally colt, a real stunner: Gold Splash

(Yes yes I know not a very imaginative name haha It's 3:11AM right now I'm tired... SO TIRED haha

One: Horse 1: ee CrCr (perlino cremello) x Horse 2: ee (chestnut) = ee aa Crcr (palomino) - most reliable method as you have a 100% chance.

I know you already got the foal you wanted but thought I would fix this so you would have the correct information for the future. c:

ee CrCr is Cremello
E_ A_ CrCr is Perlino
E_ At_ CrCr is Moreno

Awesome that's real handy info, since I'll need more palominos if I want to create a long line of them like I'm doing with my brown duns and solids, any info that can help me learn how to breed for them is much needed. Thank you to everyone who gave me info I really appreciate it :)

Thought I'd just chime in and mention there is a foundation one in the RC. Not with as pretty markings of course, but, thought you might like to know given you have rescue farm in your name.

A couple of points I'd like to add...

An EE horse will never produce a palomino.

Also, it is impossible to build a herd that will always breed palominos generation after generation. You can get ee to breed true, and always have a chestnut base, but a palomino bred to another palomino will always have a chance of producing a cremello or a plain chestnut. However, a cremello bred to a chestnut will always produce a palomino, so all is not lost. Aim to eliminate E's from your herd (you want all your horses to be ee) and introduce as much cream as you can (but not all CrCr's, or you will only get cremellos), and you will be sure to end up with a high percentage of palominos. Breed your chestnuts to your cremellos, and your palominos to whatever you have left for the highest possible percentage of palomino foals.

Thanks Silverwolves I'll check that out.

And Confessor thanks for the info I'll be careful about that, I basically just want to eventually have at least a couple of palominos at any given time even if I have to breed them more than I;d like to achieve that.
