What NOT to do with your layout!

#82161 Posted on 2016-12-22 21:02:22

Quick warning to you all... I almost lost everything!!!

I wanted to be able to see snow notifications on my homepage if they popped up, so I commented out the graphics part of my layout with html/CSS using the tags...when I later looked at my homepage, it looked a little funky, so I scrolled down to the code and the commented part was GONE!

Fortunately, I clicked back a few steps on my browser and was able to recover the code, so I saved it in a notepad file just in case.

If you haven't done so, go save a copy of your layout right now!

Yeah, comments always get deleted, I'm not sure why. I find it's inconvenient because it would be useful to add comments to my layouts saying what certain parts of the code do, so that others can readily edit them, or else have multiple versions so people can comment out one section and uncomment another to get a different variant, things like that.

But I do highly recommend people have an offline copy of their current layout as a backup, just in case of accidents. I find it's good practice that every time you go to make changes to your layout, the first thing you do is copy it into a text file and save it to your computer, then start making changes to the online version. If you don't like the result, or accidentally break the code, you've lost very little, if anything at all.

Yes.. Text files are my best friend. Shame comments get eated. Being able to leave yourself a note about what div is what is nice.
