Thanksgivng?

#76709 Posted on 2016-11-23 15:03:51

So I just spent about 5 hours baking pies for Thanksgiving (2 pumpkin, 1 classic apple, 1 pecan, and 1 maple walnut) and I was wondering if anyone else was spending their day today, or tomorrow, with baking/cooking plans. If you're the household cook what are you planning for the festivities?

Tonight I'm making hot rolls.
Then tomorrow I have to make candied yams, green bean casserole, a turkey, a ham, mashed potatoes/scalloped potatoes, and homemade ice-cream. (Tomorrow though I will have help from my dad cooking the remaining food items).

*Totally didn;t accidentally bump this prior, whoopss*

As my family is just me and my parents, we don't do a huge feast. But I spent all today making cookies, and a little cake~ Tomorrow will be making everything for the day. (Turkey, Veggies, Stuffing, etc) In addition I cook a separate "Meal" for my chickens, as they're my babies. Sooooo, making fresh veggies and stuff for them, maybe pasta, I'm not sure yet. (: So excited to cook ♥ I love cooking but I'm so bad at it.

*confetti* Hooray bakers and cooks!

We have 14 people coming over for Thanksgiving this year - a good mix of family and friends I've adopted.

My (step) dad is usually in charge of cooking all the things, but whether it's due to his age OR him witnessing how much people like my cooking, we're splitting it. And by "split" I mean he's covering the turkey and stuffing tomorrow LOL. My mom's handling the "grandma mashed potatoes" and the turkey gravy. Earlier today I made candied pecans to go on top of the salad (mixed baby greens with goat cheese, pears, dried cherries, lightly candied pecans and a maple balsamic dressing). I also made pumpkin pie and a dark-chocolate hazelnut tart. I've currently got some vanilla beans working their magic in the ice cream base that's going to get churned later. I'm also currently braising some green beans with bacon/onions/garlic/stock/apple cider vinegar and letting that cook down into a nice sauce. I'm also making a butternut squash gratin (but that's a secret because some people in my family are convinced they don't like squash) instead of sweet potatoes, so we'll see how that goes.

Everyone else is bringing something, if they are able. It should be a good time. :)

I totally forgot about my fried squash until I was reading your post Ducky! *runs to find the ingredients*

My dad was historically in charge of the entire Thanksgiving day feast, but this year I decided to take some control and now I am to cook most of the sides myself :) my dad is still cooking the ham and turkey.

I'm getting up early tomorrow to start the candied yams; tonight I have to clean the kitchen from the pie making so we have a clean slate to work with tomorrow.

Ooooo man fried squash sounds great!

Cleaning after all the cooking is so tiring. The food payoff is worth it but still, haha. Does anyone else forget to eat despite cooking /baking a bunch of food during the day? I just inhaled a meal of cheeses on crackers and popcorn because no effort food is happy food. At least today. O.o

Me? My Aunt has insisted on doing everything for tomorrow; as my family and I are the one's who's been doing it for the past 10+ years. It's kinda nice to have a break, but been cleaning the house to get it ready to decorate Friday for Christmas. :)
